Sometimes, a curse can come in the guise of gift.
Not sure what we mean? Take Iggy Azalea‘s ‘XXL Freshman Cover‘ for example. While it cemented her status as Rap’s leading debutante, it also unearthed a controversy so ugly, the likes of Max Clifford would think twice about before getting involved with.
For, after failing to make the cover herself, fellow Femcee Azealia Banks questioned a lyric spat by Azalea in ‘D.R.U.G.S’.
A lyric, which saw her label herself a ‘runaway slave master’.
Details below…
“Tire marks tire marks/Finish line with the fire marks /When the relay starts Ima run away slave….master”
In response to the controversy, Iggy responsded:
“Im writing you today to address a lyric I said a few months ago in one of my songs that I feel has been used to unfairly slander my character and paint me as a racist person.
Kendrick Lamar is one of my favorite artists and I loved his song ‘Look Out for Detox’ so much I decided to do my own version of it last year. The lyrics I wrote follow the original version closely;
One lyric in particular has offended a lot of people and for that, I apologize. The artist’s lyric was: “when the relay starts I’m a runway slave” My lyric was: “when the relay starts I’m a runaway slave…Master, sh*tting on the past gotta spit it like a pastor This is a metaphoric take on an originally literal lyric, and I was never trying to say I am a slave owner.”
However, despite the well written ‘apology’, there are some who still question the lyric- and why she showed no interested in publicly addressing it until Banks brought it up.
On the flip side, while some have labelled Azealia a ‘hater’ for pointing out Iggy herself admits was ‘tacky’, it is worth asking:
*Many thanks to MJ.
