From The Vault: Britney Spears Rocks VMA ’00

Published: Sunday 1st Jul 2012 by David

Iconic! That is fittest of description for this week’s From The Vault pick. Ladies and gents, we salute Britney Spears for her epic showing at MTV‘s 2000 Video Music Awards.

Performing a rendition of one of her many signature songs, ‘Oops, I Did It Again’, Britney delivers here a stunning spectacle, marking the true beginning of her storied relationship with the VMA’s. For many, this was the on set of the transformation of the ‘… Baby One More Time’ belle.
Setting sail with a shortened version of her Darkchild-produced cover of ‘Satisfaction’ by the Rolling Stones, this showing proved to be controversial after a scantily-clad. Spears, who at the time was still catering to an audience of teeny-boppers, stripped down to a sparkling nude outfit on-cue to perform the tongue-in-cheek ‘Oops’.
The said song and parent album of the same name were blockbuster smashes with the track being a global Top 10 hit and the LP debuting at #1. And, as at writing, remains among the best selling albums of all time with sales exceeding 20 millions units.
*****
What’s so special about this performance, as was routine in her early days, was Spears’ ability to “sell” you her product. The choreography in this specific video isn’t particularly intricate or out-of-this-world, her mic stayed “off” the whole show through (after all, it is Britney, b*tch). Yet, her stage presence is just off-the-Richter and she serves up a whole new dimension to a rather cheese-soaked song, relying solely on her natural charisma and the swag she oozed. Both of which see sadly confined to the past.
This is the Britney we became enamored with, not the robot her team have been carting out over the last
six years.
And, while we stay wondering if we will ever see the day the fierce stage-slayer in the clip above returns, we are grateful for artists such as Beyonce, Lady GaGa and Usher for giving us moments as powerful as this VMA’s showing in today’s age.

What are some the most iconic performances of the last few years…for you?

no Starring Beyonce, Lady gaga, rihanna, katy perry, ECT, to overcome this, I’m no fan of Spears but she acknowledge that pattern in its time frame.

Hopefully do it again, greetings from Caracas – Venezuela. I recommend to all this site: http://www.3xtras.net is very good

That was an amazing performance. You can say whatever you want about her current…situation, but you can’t deny she nailed that stage back then. And she could pull off a tour as well. I hope that Britney returns some day. And I’m not talking about the same moves or the same abilities, because she’s 15 years older now. I’m talking about energy and attitude.

P.S : What “moment as powerful as this VMA’s showing” has Usher ever given to you?

    • POP ROYALTY ( Révolution) July 1, 2012

Let’s Not go there , at least Usher SING and DANCE at the same time , Brit is always a Lip-syncing junkie !

      i love her , but child ………..

      • ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) July 1, 2012

You’re right. Usher is a much better vocalist than Britney, but I don’t think he’s doing any iconic performance, not on the level of Britney’s ‘Oops’ performance anything. Just my opinion, though. I know he’s your king 😎

      • POP ROYALTY ( Révolution) July 1, 2012

Usher is Amazing. and i don’t know what your definition of Iconic. seeing U talking about brit-brit’s 2007’s performance of “GM” and calling it iconic made me confused.
if u think iconic= ppl talk about it , then your definition is wrong ! her iconic performance is that one with the snake , u mention the word britney and this is the first thing that comes to anyone’s mind.

the only iconic thing about that 2007’s performance is rihanna’s laugh 8) #shade

      • ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) July 1, 2012

I was only kidding about her ’07 performance. 😉

My definition of iconic is something that is positively remembered for years and becomes a blueprint after many fail to replicate it.

Britney has 3 iconic performanes : VMA’s 2000 (mostly because of the striptease and not because of the dancing), VMA’s 2001 (because of the snake) and VMA’s 2003 (because of the kiss). I hope she’ll deliver more iconic performances in the future, but for now, that’s what she’s brought to the table. 😎

I just don’t think Usher has a performance that everyone remembers and other artists have tried to copy. That doesn’t mean he’s bad or mediocre. 99% of performers never get to have an iconic moment in their careers imo!

      • POP ROYALTY ( Révolution) July 1, 2012

well , and still “iconic” mostly refers to something that caused controversy. i’m not here for that type of “iconic”.

what is iconic differs from person to another , so ….

and usher got lots of great performances that will s*** on britney’s big time. i think he needed to show his snake/d*** in one or something for it to be iconic. 😆

    • yeah July 1, 2012

Shutup and watch his vma performance 2004..that was iconic

      • ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) July 1, 2012

First of all, I wont’ shut up. Secondly, I HAVE watched his 2004 VMA’s performance and I see nothing iconic about it. Thirdly, some people seem to confuse “iconic” for “entertaining”. It’s not the same thing.

      • irene46 July 2, 2012

i don’t know of any of those three britney performances that

i must say i forgot how truly beautiful britney was back in her days of reign. her face was gorgeous and her body was like pow!

i thought her performance with mj on his special was totally electrifying. she came off classy and her strutting, prancing and over the shoulder smoldering glances were major s***.

it was obvious why they wanted to crown her the next madonna. it didn’t work out. stop bringing shame to the great old school britney.

i don’t know of anyone has tried to copy these three (iconic?) acts. as a matter of fact her ‘snake dance’ was ripped off from aaliyah’s ‘we need a resolution’ video.

if we were judging iconic by performance value, imo, christina smoked britney in their slutty virgin bride act with madonna. christina really sleazed it up. her hand brush to madonna’s thigh put some extra points on the hot s*** meter.

britney appeared somewhat stiff and not so into it. seems that may have been the beginning of her downhill slide.

  4. onmyradar July 1, 2012

    She’s such an ugly weirdo!!!

  5. BS22 July 1, 2012

    I can’t stand that b****!

She can’t sing, dance or anything… She’s just talentless

  6. Beyonce_mega_Star July 1, 2012

    FLOOOOOOOOOP

  7. Nichole July 1, 2012

With the zombie like Britney of today, it is very difficult to watch her past iconic performances like this one. I can’t bare to do it because it would just cause sadness and pain. She is just a former shadow of her own self, and she knows that is not the Britney Spears millions of fans grew to love.

It ‘s been nearly 6 years since her public meltdown, and she still has yet to bring the fire back to the stage. When I see old ass legends such as Cher, Madonna and Tina still rockin the stage after 30 something years of performing (all 3 women have children) it isn’t necessary to make excuses for Britney. I get fed up with fans talking about her breakdown, how she supposefly has mental problems and is bipilar. No need to make so many excuses for someone who clearly does not give a s*** anymore.

Britney has become a bore, and even though I will still support her music, I will not pay a damn to see a lipsynching dead zombie on stage. That is like watching paint dry.

    • S****** Blonde July 1, 2012

      Sad but true.

  8. Nichole July 1, 2012

Excuse the spelling errors. Damn cell phone.

  9. Benron July 1, 2012

Beleive it or not all this article was was a point to say Britney Spears is not a good performer anymore, and Beyonce is still the best female performer (I.e Queen). The fact that he added Gaga in there was completely to hide the fact that he was praising Beyonce, (notice He always names the two of them when trying to praise Beyonce to make it less evident).

Will they hire someone with actual non-biased journalism experience to write here? We get it Beyonce is “The queen”. Why do you feel the need to point it out every 5 minutes, it, just like your Rita Ora obsession makes it seem like what your saying isn’t true. Please learn to at least persuasively write when you stan for your faves…

    • POP ROYALTY ( Révolution) July 1, 2012

Beyonce is @sam’s God and Nicki is his idol.

what type of a person is that ?

  10. POP ROYALTY ( Révolution) July 1, 2012

and the desperation for more hits for this raggedy blog continues …………

    pathetic.

if u want more hits , Riri’s gran gran dolly has lost her battle with cancer 🙁 , hope this make u feel good that she’s sad right now !!! cuz you are a heartless queen who will do anything for hits. u and her haters should be happy now.

    *leaves*

    • Benron July 1, 2012

Virtusio Unintullectual Said she can’t sing for her “Grandmothers life” I called it a horrible person and then her grandma died a couple hours later.
      These beystans are crazy.

      • POP ROYALTY ( Révolution) July 1, 2012

        ^^ man , i don’t care , but that made me sad 🙁 !!

Beystans can get evil tho, well it affects their beyonce as u can see ….. ppl are tired of her because of her stans who can not tolerate anything less than kissing her ass , she’s talented and all , but she’s not exceptional as they want us to believe.

      • S****** Blonde July 1, 2012

I been saying this for a long time, her fans make people dislike her, at the end of the day it’s the same thing that happen with the Little Monsters.

      • POP ROYALTY ( Révolution) July 1, 2012

        @s****** :

u know we agreed since day one when it comes to this point.

        i love her , But c’mon …….

gaga and her monsters are not that serious tho. the biggest thing they can do is to call u names and curse u , not like the hive. they can s*** u if you didn’t know that bey and jay-z were married …. 😆

  11. lordmir July 1, 2012

Honestly, i don’t understand why people say this performance is huge. She don’t sing live, the choreagraphie is not impressive. She had a good energy but she was 20 so nothing spectacular. Imo, we have seen a lot of performance better than that.

    • JohnVidal(RIP Whitney-truegreat) July 1, 2012

Exactly! Britney never was this megatalented music star not even in her prime and not at any front. After 25 years old it just became unbearable since she lost the only thing she had which was some spark in her face and some stage presence

  12. Timothy July 1, 2012

You can praise Beyoncé and Gaga as much as you want to, but there is simply no denying that Britney at her best is untouchabel. And this performance simply proves it. Her charisma, energy and stage presence is simply incredible and no other artist in the last 15 years has achieved the same level. That’s why Britney is an iconic and the Queen of Pop of the last two decades.

    • lordmir July 1, 2012

Britney at her best is untouchable , good joke!.. We know lots of performers who kill her on stage. Even at her best, she can’t sing live. She is iconic but she is for all the bad reasons.

    • Small_Angel July 1, 2012

Britney was touched by Christina Aguilera (by her talent) at Britney’s Prime. Christina took the grammy with very limited time since her debut at times Britney was VERY and the MOST popular artist. Beyonce is Great, Britney was still Great and still can make a come back, but Gaga? I don’t know.

      • anna July 2, 2012

i agree!!! and for those who say that britney cant sing live, well look it up on yut tube and you will see tha fact she can sing live… of course she does not sing live most of the time but she has a good range of voice. and thi perfomance was epic… iconic

  13. Benron July 1, 2012

My Only Question is, how do you stan for Beyonce who can sing and dance (even though Im noT a fan of most of her music) and then Stan for Chris’ and Nicki.

There are stages of “can’t dance” Cherly cole can kind of dance, Rihanna cant really dance, Katy CANNOT DANCE, and then you have Nicki Minaj who is just a painful stiff, barely capable of moving an inch disaster!

And Unlike you punching bags, Chris brown lyp-synces, all that tells me is they don’t take themselves seriously as a singer, they are not trying to get better. How dare you call other artist lazy when yours keeps the mic off 99% of the time? SMH!

Sam tries to point out others faults and hide his faves, smh at him acting as if its a milestone when Bey/Nicki rise to number 27/29 on the charts. Or The 37 year old short single mother Rita gets to 62, try harder Sam, the only wig getting snatched is YOURS, stealing articles from and spamming links to you know who, And it will probably be by a more RESPECTFUL, UNBIASED, INTELLIGENT individidual!

    • Benron July 1, 2012

      *And unlike your Punching bags

  14. Auntie_Jackie July 1, 2012

Britney used to KILL. She’s a sweetheart and a talented performer. Not the best singer, but awesome dancer and cute personality.

    • anna July 2, 2012

      completely true!!

      • irene46 July 2, 2012

1 out of 3. cute personality.

  15. monstarebel July 1, 2012

so fierce she’s epic!!! britney SLAYS!!!!

  16. S****** Blonde July 1, 2012

I remember watching this performance it was everything, she was in her moment, all her Mtv peformances are iconic, except for “Gimme More” but she was the greates female singer of her time, best performer, most beautiful girl in the world, Beyonce has never been as big as she was, never and to me she gave everything on stage but still something is missing to me, so please Sam CAN YOU MAKE A POST without mention her, God! it seems you want her to be part of our lives in every possible way. Anyway the same goes for USHER, he’s a great performer but a little bit forced to me, he tries too much, it’s like Chris Brown at the beginning was great now is just impossible for him dance without been exaggerated, Justin Timberlake dance great it comes natural for him, he has flow, charisma and he doesn’t try to impress you with his dancing like the others, back to Britney, she is already a Legend, no one of her age is, no Beyonce, no Christina, just her the Legendary miss Britney Spears, she makes me sad everytime i see her face now, it’s like she is still sad.

    • ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) July 1, 2012

I agree with pretty much everything you said, except for one thing. Her ‘Gimme More’ performance IS iconic! Iconic for all the wrong reasons, but still iconic nonetheless. People in the media and even casual fans are STILL talking about it! 😀

      • S****** Blonde July 1, 2012

Well! you know i know that performance is gonna be remembered for all the wrong reasons but to me that was the beginning of her moves today, so to me it’s not iconic.

    • POP ROYALTY ( Révolution) July 1, 2012

well , for me it was an iconic downfall , sorry !! she couldn’t even move properly ! the only thing i liked is when she grabbed one of her dancer’s crotch ……

“Blackout’ still slay tho … , everytime this song comes in the club everyone go wild with it !!

Gimme gimme more gimme gimme MOArrrr …..:)

    • JohnVidal(RIP Whitney-truegreat) July 1, 2012

Britney can be an icon (of the past, and that´s sad seeing as she is only kike 30 years old) if u want, but not a legend. Legends are based on talent and they remain thanks to that

      • POP ROYALTY ( Révolution) July 1, 2012

        @John :

You are wrong , to be a Legend u doesn’t have to be talented. u must have done something that is Unique and influential to generations that are coming after u.

and Brit is Both Icon and a Legend. i’m not so crazy about her , but man , just deal with It. she’s the face of late 90’s and the biggest act in the 00’s.

      • S****** Blonde July 1, 2012

John your wrong, she’s a legend, Pop is right, it’s not about talent, is the charecter and she was a living Barbie.

    • RICHANDBLACK11(JUST LIKE BEY) July 1, 2012

ummmm wrong I will give brit icon but she damn sure aint nobody’s LEGEND

    • anna July 2, 2012

i couldnt agree more @s****** blonde.. she is a living legend, the only one of her generation.. why? because she represented a specific time (pop t*** era) and was the voice of a new generation of teenagers. that made britney an icon and to be fair there are lot of artists who are more talented than britney but she accomplished that. and she used to have an amazing stage presence and charisma. her perfomances at the VMAS are iconic. she was the perfect artist for th MTV of late 90s and 2000s. she is the legendary miss britney spears

      • irene46 July 2, 2012

without janet there would be no britney. even in her best days britney couldn’t touch her.

britney may be an icon because of her hugely nmemorable record sales when she was ‘t*** queen’ from 1999-2003. nowadays she is just kept relevant by the media (who can’t let go of old school britney) hyping her as though she still the beatiful record breaking performer from years ago.

to me legends are memorable because they have many years of serious critical acclaim without necessarily having the media and commercial success. i’d consider christina more of a legend than britney. she lasted many years and still gets praises and accolades for her voice.

        janet = icon
        mj = icon and legend

  17. An0thrDream July 1, 2012

Britney Spears use to be INCREDIBLE!!!! I use to LOVE watching her perform!!

Nowadays the top female PERFORMERS are Beyonce, Lady Gaga, and Ciara. They have NEVER let me down when it comes to a live performance/show/concert etc – The only artists I’ll actually watch are Chris Brown, Ciara, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Adele, Florence, Lana Del Rey, and Usher. Everybody else have shown inconsistent performance/drag

  18. Boss July 1, 2012

That Chris Brown performance in 07 was epic.

    • Benron July 1, 2012

Yes she could, thats why she hasn’t 19 dance club number ones, she clearly did it 19 times.

  19. MH July 1, 2012

I remember this performance like it was yesterday. I was 7 years old and I was OBSESSED with Britney Spears, this brings back so many memories. Lol.

    • TeamBreezy July 1, 2012

      me too!!!

  20. Blackman July 1, 2012

    Overrated she can’t sing

    • TeamBreezy July 1, 2012

Get it together . …no one cares! The biggest icons of our time cant “sing”

      Madonna
      Janet Jackson
      Elvis Presley
      MJ

      These are not “vocalists”

      • JohnVidal(RIP Whitney-truegreat) July 1, 2012

MJ can´t sing? That´s new! hahaha

      • S****** Blonde July 1, 2012

The King and Queen can sing, stop with this s***, everybody has a different voice, they definitely can sing.

    • RICHANDBLACK11(JUST LIKE BEY) July 1, 2012

John I have to agree with you on this …..MJ can’t sing? That’s for sure is a new one…..

      • TeamBreezy July 1, 2012

No one said he cant sing, but MJ isnt in the history books because of his vocals ala Whitney or Mariah ..he was a GREAT PERFORMER and entertainer … thats my point!

      • RICHANDBLACK11(JUST LIKE BEY) July 1, 2012

Get it together . …no one cares! The biggest icons of our time cant “sing”

        MJ

        ___________________________________________
you did state that he can’t sing…I agree his voice changed in the late 90’s but 60’s 70’s 80’s you didn’t want that voice….yasss gawd hunty

      • irene46 July 2, 2012

        @ teambreezy july 3 345p

are you kidding me?! mj was always known as a good singer. once he moonwalked the focus went on his ability as a great performer but he has NEVER been accused of not being a good singer.

elvis was also known in his later years as a good singer.

britney could never known as a singer and now she can’t even perform.

  21. TeamBreezy July 1, 2012

Simply – Hands down – THE BEST performer of her era!!

I remember this performance like it was yesterday

  22. Um OK July 1, 2012

This performance slayed back in the day and still holds up today! The writer of this article mentioned she had her mic turned off the entire time but I clearly hear her live vocals throughout this part esp at the beginning with the Oooh yeah yeahh and then it fades to lower but she is in fact singing here in one of her few televised live vocals. Britney also did the damn thing on that Trl performance back in 2003 when she performed I Got That Boom Boom in blue halter in freezing November time weather. Also, I will admit that her performances aren’t close to what they were in this vid but she had her moments of spark and fun during recent performances. Most notably on her comeback performance in 2008 on X Factor UK. Her body was banging and she had great energy during that. That is all. XO Britney 4 Life. F*** haterz! 😉

    • anna July 2, 2012

you are right !!!! i forgot that perfomance on the x factor uk!!! she was incredible !!!!!!!!!!

  23. JohnVidal(RIP Whitney-truegreat) July 1, 2012

She reminds me of Chris Brown, performance but always lip syncing. If u bash one of them for that you need to do it with the other one too. If not u are truly biased

  24. virtuoso intellect July 1, 2012

wow i remember this performance. Britney shut it down. I used to be a hardcore Brirtney stan back in the day, i would watch tv hoping her pepsi “live the dream” commercial would be aired. *Sigh* those were the pre-Beyonce days. Good thing too cus today’s Britney does nothing for me

    • RICHANDBLACK11(JUST LIKE BEY) July 1, 2012

Ain’t that the truth…..I give it to Brit she was HOT for white girl standards back in the day but now ummmm…………..

      • virtuoso intellect July 1, 2012

just like kelly rowland, she gets pity points

puh-lease, my fandom is not act of charity. if u cant entertain me …. ivayase

        @ virtuoso intellect july 1 502p…

how could kelly rowland who can sing and dance better than britney EVER could be in need of your pity points. she may not have commercial success but it’s sure in the hell isn’t from lack of talent.

    • RICHANDBLACK11(JUST LIKE BEY) July 1, 2012

yasss GAWD hunty that was EPIC

  25. Tbozfan10 July 1, 2012

What’s crazy is how ppl act like gaga is the popstar since Madonna or MJ or something but in reality she doesn’t even come close to being as big a star as Britney was in these years.

  26. NIKKO July 1, 2012

Sorry!! Not even Beyonce can touch this preformance….. QuEEN of POP!!!!!!
    Its Britney B*tch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • RICHANDBLACK11(JUST LIKE BEY) July 1, 2012

      • irene46 July 2, 2012

        @ teambreezy…

all that means is one doesn’t have to have talent remain successful when one has the media hyping and kissing your ass.

i will alwasy stan for Britney – i live for CLASSIC Britney but I still go hard for CURRENT Britney – she has already made her mark but i hope that she gets that spark back for one final album and tour before she calls it quits

    • nikko July 1, 2012

I know right i think she has one more cd with jive and i think she will retire.. 🙁
SHe will always be the queen tho…… 🙂

  31. tish July 3, 2012

Britney and Beyonce are both ICONS and in another decades legends of this era. Yes Britney lost it but she went thru alot and im not even a fan but Im far from a hater. No one can accomplish what she has in that time span from 99′ to 03′. And anyone who discredit Beyonce to uplift Britney is really bugging when britney was running things Beyonce was apart of the biggest girl group of all time and they had #1 songs and diamond albums as well as black women. Also anyone that has 16 grammys and receiving millenium awards is definitely iconic status. Both are in the history books and hold records that people will never break. I really wish Britney luck and happy she is still making music and more happy in her life now.
