As the music industry adjusts to a world without the late great Whitney Houston, we’re reminded of her incomparable talent courtesy of R&B pioneer R.Kelly.
The acclaimed hitmaker today released a special version of ‘I Look To You’ the 2009 hit he wrote for her Platinum comeback album of the same name.
Featuring all-new vocals from the fallen songbird (lifted from a studio take that wasn’t used for the original), Kelly also appears on the re-worked version.
We’d advise that you have a Kleenex or three at the ready. This one’s a tear-jerker…
Epic, yet oh so bittersweet.
Even more so than the original, this incarnation of the cut showcases the potential embedded in Whitney’s “new” voice, which when paired with Kelly’s elevates the track to a new emotional heights.
Yet, as gripping as the lyrics are, it’s now more than ever do they pierce and pierce deep. For, unfortunately, the narrative of triumphant and overcoming is sadly one that would elude Whitney in the end.
Still, we’re oh so thankful to have been been blessed with this unexpected gem. Kudos to R. Kelly and rest in peace Whitney.
‘I Look To You (ft. R. Kelly)’ is lifted from upcoming compilation ‘I Will Always Love You: The Best Of Whitney Houston’ which arrives on November 13th.
