Published: Wednesday 26th Sep 2012 by Sam

Reaching six albums is a feat few artists ever achieve; a fact which renders Pink‘s performance on the Billboard 200 this week even more remarkable.

For, the Pop rebel has hit the #1 spot for the for first time in her 12 year career with her sixth studio album, ‘The Truth About Love’.

Initially earmarked for opening sales in the region of 220,000, the set blazed past expected estimates to shift a hefty 280,000 units in its premiere week according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Not only does the LP earn the honor of serving as her first chart-topper on home soil, it also stands as her biggest first week debut. Prior to now,  2001’s ‘M!ssundaztood’ held that title after selling 220,000 copies first week to land at #6.

And as if that wasn’t enough, ‘The Truth About Love’ now becomes the third-biggest debut this year, following Justin Bieber‘s  ‘Believe’ (374,000) and Madonna‘s ill-fated ‘MDNA’ (359,000).

Led by ‘Blow Me (One Last Kiss)’, the album was also preceded by a major promotional push from the likes of Target, who    cultivated an “exclusive special edition” of the LP – which they also plugged with a television spot. Amazon also sold the album at a special discount price of $5.

On the performance front, Pink rocked out on the 2012 MTV VMA’s, Today Show, Ellen, and the iHeart Radio Festival.

The moral of story? When great talent, meets great songs that are handled by a great team, great things happen!

Congrats to Pink!

Sidenote: In other chart news, G.O.O.D Music‘s much-hyped ‘Cruel Summer’ bowed at #2 with impressive sales of 205,000.
