I loved Missy in the 90s/early 2000s, but she waited too damn long. No one is checking for her 90s style production style and tired rapping. It’s a different musical climate. I’m not a Nicki Fan, but she basically set the blueprint for today’s rap industry if you want to be successful – you need to basically do 10 features a month on other people’s tracks and do tons and tons of videos, appearances, crazy styles, product placement, etc. There is NO time for talk (“I’m going to release an album next year”). No sweetie, if you were following Nicki’s plan, that damn album would’ve been out yesterday and the re-release would already be planned. You’d have the whole strategy for the next 14 months. Missy has never experienced the “new music industry” – last time she put s*** out, people were still buying CDs. You could just “wing it’ when it came to your promo because there was no other rapper out than Lil Kim and no competition from social media. The only choice we had was to watch BET because there was no internet to find alternatives. Yes, she was a musical genius in the 90s, but that was over 10 years ago. She’s going to hustle like Brandy if she wants to have her comeback. Missy has a very entitled attitude but the thing is that NO ONE OWES HER ANYTHING.

Yes, she wrote two moderate hits for Monica nine years ago in 2003 for “After the Storm,” but the other material she contributed to other artist’s releases have been album filler. None charted. Thanks!

An album that has only sold 630k (which is awful) and only one single on the charts, which is nearly out. She’s barely treading water.

The only place Nicki is really successful is online — on Twitter and silly ass blogs. And really, who cares? You can keep that. The buying public has never been in awe of Minaj. Her record sales have never been anything explosive or impressive, she’s never dominated the scene and she’s already struggling to maintain what little bit of noise she created.
When Nicki puts out an album that goes 4, 5 or 6x platinum in the U.S., moves over 10 million units WW, has multiple singles in the top 20 (and at least one at the summit) and is able to renegotiates her record deal for some record breaking figure…then you can claim she’s some kind of template for others to follow. Until then she’s no one to look up to, or try to pattern oneself after. Nicki’s success is not at all awe-inspiring or explosive. She’s basically riding the fence of this “wave”, and her career won’t survive after it’s over.

SWV – I Missed Us didn’t go to number 1 on the billboard chart, and might not sell millions but is still one of the best albums to be released this year but because of the genre didn’t get free promotion via various media outlets.
