For many, Gwen Stefani’s short lived but well spent solo career marks one of Pop’s best eras to date.
Spawning two solo albums outside of ‘No Doubt‘, her time at the top saw her stand tall as one of her genre’s more talented it girls, inspiring the likes of Lady GaGa (see last scene of ‘Love Game‘ video) and Nicki Minaj (see Harajuku Barbie).
However, this month has seen Stefani question the authenticity of her run, in an interview with Spanish Vogue.
She explained:
“I did the solo thing, but I felt like I was trying to play a character in a way, this Alice in Wonderland pretend version of myself. But this, being in No Doubt, is really who I am.”
If Gwen does decide to go solo again, we’d put good money the album being just as well received as her first two and some of today’s highest sellers.
Of course, though her comments would indicate she’s ‘over’ with the style and themes that made her so exciting, we could see her dominate many a chart with an easy listening, ‘summer in California’ type Pop piece. Wishful thinking? Maybe- but with the below still as moving today as it was ‘back then’, we see no reason for Gwen not to give the solo thing at least one more shot.
