Product Vs. Promotion: Christina Milian

Long before she rode high on charts with her signature hit ‘Dip It Low’, Christina Milian was by no means a stranger to the spotlight.  Spending most of her early teen years aboard various Disney broadcasts, her late teen years – like Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears before her – saw her sprout from Disney darling to sex kitten.

Indeed, it was 2001’s ‘AM To PM’ that helped awaken interest in the young singer.  Armed with dance moves and vocals similar to R&B belle Mya, Milian quickly drew comparisons to all of the genre’s early millenium maestras.  Unfortunately, that critical acclaim was not matched commercially as the album fell on deaf ears…

However, the buzz was certainly just enough to build anticipation for the singer’s next effort – 2004’s ‘It’s About Time’.  And, time it was…to ‘Dip It Low’.  The lead single from the singer’s sophomore effort skyrocketed up charts all on the heels of a killer East Asian inspired instrumental, glossy/sexed up video with choreography to match (and a little help from rapper Fabolous).  Landing the singer’s first (and only) top 5, it seemed Urban Pop’s new leading temptress had arrived.

Despite the album’s second single ‘Whatever You Want’ obviously not giving fans what they wanted in a follow-up, the album was still able to float on the success of ‘Dip’ alone.

Unfortunately, her career seemed to follow the song’s advice as it, yet again, dipped low.

As two years would pass before fans got their next peek at Milian, she re-emerged with the Jazmine Sullivan-penned ‘Say I’.  It appears the fans said “no, thank you” in response as the album failed to meet the success of its predecessor (as has every single since).  New record deals and relationships with producers (Dre of Cool & Dre and marriage to The Dream) impelled promises of new material – none of which ever completely surfaced (despite a few leaks that drummed up insubstantial buzz).

So, what’s the problem?  Urban pop’s undying comeback kid has kept a high social profile including a gig on NBC‘s ‘The Voice’, but is it enough to thrust her back atop charts?
