US Charts: Rihanna’s ‘Unapologetic’ Awarded Gold Certification

Published: Wednesday 9th Jan 2013 by David

500,000.

While the likes of Drake, Beyonce & Lady GaGa find shifting the above number in units all too easy, their ‘less gifted’ competitor Rihanna continues to struggle to do the same. Well, at least in the same amount of time.

Sure, though global sales of her new LP ‘Unapologetic’ have been sweet to say the least, its US run has been a little ‘so so’ to say the least. So unimpressive, it has only just been certified Gold for sales of over 500k…two months after release.

Selling less copies in 7 weeks than Beyonce‘s 2006 ‘B’Day‘ moved in a week and Drake‘s ‘Take Care’ moved in four days, ‘Unapologetic‘ now enjoys Gold status, giving fans no choice but to expect it to enjoy a similar chart run to 2010’s ‘Loud’, which soared internationally but failed to ‘dominate’ in her domestic market.

Indeed, despite serving a number of stellar jams- Elijah Blake‘s ‘No Love Allowed‘ and the mind blowing ‘Love Without Tragedy‘- the Def Jam backed release is yet to live up the hype generated by its lead single ‘Diamonds‘- which has now surpassed sales of 2 million units in the US alone.

The album’s US Gold status marks the latest piece of good news to storm Roc Nation in the last week.

For, less than six months after release Rita Ora’s debut album ‘ORA’ was certified Platinum in the UK, weeks before she readies her US launch which will come hand in hand with a brand new LP, designed to introduce her to the competitive market.
