Next up on From The Vault is a R&B gem ‘Where My Girls At?’ – courtesy of the ladies from 702.
The track, produced and written by Keybeats and TGJ favorite Missy Elliott, was the first single from the ladies sophomore set, the aptly titled ‘702’ released in 1999.
At a time when mozzarella-Pop from the likes of Britney, Christina and N’SYNC was the tastiest genre for radio programmers, ‘Girls’ managed to reach the higher tiers of the Billboard Hot 100 and Hip-Hop/R&B charts peaking at #4 and #3 respectively. Though statistically not a worlwide hit -albeit hitting #22 in the UK – we firmly believe it is a classic and no 90’s R&B themed party would be complete without this.
Like many at the time, the single’s promotional video directed by Billie Woodruff was highly inspired by the “Matrix craze” that was only in beginning stages back then.
{Sidenote: we really dig this vid, but the dancer’s outfits during the last sequence remain a big NO!}
With R&B seemingly on the up, could 2013 be the year where vocal harmony groups make a comeback in the mainstream charts? Nothing would make us happier. The likes of MKS and Stooshe are flying the flag in the UK, now we’re keen to see who will carry the torch for girl groups in the US and serve up tunes as enduring as ‘Where My Girls At?” in this day and age.
While we wait, we have to hit “replay” on this one.
One of my all time favorite songs from 702. It’s too bad 702 broke up and it sucks how the other two girls barely sang lead vocals with Meelah as the lead vocalist, probably one of the reasons why the broke up because all of them can sing.
If that’s the case, why did they find a new LEAD SINGER when Meelah originally left the group? Irish & Misha weren’t strong vocalists and they knew that.
i kinda love the dancers outfits in the last sequence. its meant to be wild crazy extreme futuristic.
50 dancers in all in one fire engine red hooded mowhawk knee fringed spandex outfits? hell yes!
Who???
No offense but who are they?
702 was a dope group! I loved Meelahs jazzy vocals. “Star” was suuuch an underrated album. I’m still rockin “I Still Love You” till this day….
It’s crazy, cuz I just bought a few songs from their first album No Doubt the other day, I listened to that album a lot during my early teens. For me, that was their best album, I didn’t really listen to the second one.
That was the second one
No doubt was the first
Nobodies obviously
#DontKnowThem
This song was inexcapable when it came out…
Nah, Steelo was my jam….still is my jam. Stooshie are flying the flag for no-one, they’re not r&b and not good either.
People asking who 702 are just shows the musical ignorance on this site
LOL@these people asking “who?” When were you born, in 2002? Go to sleep. 702 was dope. I remember when they came out with Subway and there were like 5 or 6 of them in the group.
I love this song, its on my ipod actually… i remember owning that album this song was from, i might have to go download it
I SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Love them! If you haven’t you should check out their last 2 albums! They always had great music!
This was a big song back in the day!!!
Didn’t one of them, pass away, dying from Cancer, some years ago. And no I’m not getting them confused with the late Natina Reed from Blaque.
Still they had a few good songs!
I’m 23 years old. I listened to them from the beginning when i was just a child, all the way up until their last album, ‘STAR’ which has some huge songs on it. Love these girls and there harmonies, Meelah is a beast!!! This song IS STILL A HIT in music music.
