That Grape Juice Meets Yasmeen!

Published: Friday 7th Jun 2013 by David

Ever eager to shine  light on both fresh and seasoned talent, todays sees us introduce an artist whose work is seeing her become on of Pop’s brightest burning newbies….Yasmeen.

Hitting London Town last week to perform alongside Miguel last week, the ‘Guns & Roses’ starlet caught up with TGJ UK for a short but sweet conversation you can peep below!

TGJ: For those who don’t know, how did you get your start in music?
Yasmeen: Well, I’ve been singing my whole life. I started in church, I did a lot of my school with my worship team. I met my manager who like me is really passionate about music-we worked hard, recorded a lot and to send our music out and it’s been a great journey ever since.
TGJ: We love the song ‘Love Can’t Breathe’, how would you describe your sound to someone unfamiliar with it?
Yasmeen: Oh thank you! I describe it as moody Pop, it’s a little darker- there’s a lot of emotion and all of the songs are all really personal. I tend to write when I’m depressed (laughs) but I need to start writing happier music- I actually have began writing happier music.
TGJ: Your YouTube covers have now generated over 1 million views, who would you say your biggest influences were and how much of this can be heard in your music?
Yasmeen: There are so many! There’s Lauryn Hill, Beyonce and Kanye West, they come to mind right now. College Dropout’ changed my life when that came out and Lauryn’s writing is  so clever and emotional, I love all three of them.
TGJ: In a perfect world, what would a Yasmeen recording contract look like?
Yasmeen: I think the most important thing for me would be to have creative control. I think being able to really create is the most important thing for any artist because that’s when can be most honest with the people who listen to us.
TGJ: You’re currently in London, have you had the chance to check out a few of our artists and if so, which ones?
Yasmeen: I actually just ran into Miguel, he’s really really nice. I met Lovelle– she’s one of the girls I’ll be performing with tonight at his show. As far collaborations go, I’d love to work with John Newman. Emeli Sande is one of my favorites right now, her music and performances are so inspiring because it comes from a real place and you can tell.
TGJ: Finally, in the grand scheme of things how would Yasmeen like to be remembered?
Yasmeen: My whole purpose in life is to be a light and make music that really helps people…that inspires them. I just want people to remember me as someone that was a real inspiration, and who made good music. That’s what I want.
Love Yasmeen just as much as we do?
