  20. Bone to Pick June 21, 2013

I am excited for the video; but I feel the need to address something regarding this ‘Talk a Good Game’ era. It is NOT panning out to be the era (or the album) that finally confirms what I’ve known all along; Kelly is so much more than “that girl from Destiny’s Child” or ‘Beyonce’s gal pal’. This era should solidify Kelly as one of the biggest and brightest R&B stars of today, but instead of focusing on how amazing the album is, how much Kelly has grown (artistically, vocally and as a woman), and how far she has come; the media, the press, the blogosphere, and even certain fan(stan)bases(who shall remain nameless) insist on making this era all about one song that addresses one period in Kelly’s life and just so happens to mention Beyonce. Now what should be the biggest album of Kelly’s career is being overshadowed by asinine speculations of envy toward Beyonce. Even if Dirty Laundry were about feelings of envy over Beyonce’s rise to solo stardom(which it’s NOT), WHO CARES!!! It’s KELLY’s song. It’s KELLY’s experience and it’s KELLY’s revelation which she was brave enough to share with the world. Why are people making it all about Beyonce? I’LL TELL YOU WHY.
I truly believe that ‘the powers that be’ don’t want Kelly to escape Beyonce’s shadow. As far as media outlets are concerned, they seem to feel that this is what defines Kelly and keeps her ‘in her place’. She can never be allowed a platform of her own without Beyonce’s name being attached to it because if that ever happens, Kelly Rowland stands the chance of becoming an artist who can actually compete with Beyonce on a level playing field. Of course the industry can’t let THAT happen. I realize that. I expect that from them. I understand that’s how they are. What I don’t understand is why Kelly allows herself to be used as a pawn in their chess game. WHY does she keep allowing people to reduce her to Beyonce’s shadow? WHY are you still talking about Beyonce during your interviews? Address the song, yes. Clarify it’s meaning, absolutely. But who gives a damn what Beyonce “thought of the song”. If people want to know what Beyonce thought, felt,or had to say about Dirty Laundry, then they should STOP asking Kelly and START asking Beyonce. I’m really getting tired of every promotional opportunity that Kelly has for this album turning into nothing more than a Beyonce love fest. Kelly really needs to shut that crap down. We know that you and Bey are “sisters”. We know how “close” the two of you are. We’ve known this for years. Anyone who doesn’t know it is either stupid or living under a rock. You don’t have to keep saying these things in every interview.I also wish Kelly would stop letting messy @$$ people tell her what HER song is about, Kelly needs to tell people ONCE AND FOR ALL that this song is not about envy nor is it about jealousy nor is it about Beyonce. The song is about KELLY. Anyone with half a brain and the ability to listen and comprehend would know that the song is obviously about feelings of inadequacy at that time in her life. She was in an abusive relationship that obviously messed with her psyche as well as her relationship with family and friends(Beyonce in particular), and all of this just so happened to be going on while Beyonce was becoming the phenom that she is today (beginning with and during her Dangerously in Love era). Kelly is simply sharing an awful experience and deep pain from a low point in her life and the part that Beyonce and this ex-lover played in it. It is in no way a confession of “jealousy”. That is simply the theory that people who WANT Kelly to be jealous of Beyonce are pulling out of their backsides in an attempt to create drama where there is none.

This era should be about Talk a Good Game because as a collective, the album is phenomenal. It showcases Kelly(the same way her previous albums have) as her own artist in her own lane with her own story. Beyonce may be a part of that story but she is not nor should she be the central focus. That position belongs to Kelly alone. I am sick of disrespectful, clueless, messy interviewers, correspondents and bloggers constantly trying to take that position from Kelly and I’m even more sick of Kelly(and her “team”)constantly ALLOWING it to happen. Make it about the album. Make it about Kelly. Those are the things the people who truly support Kelly Rowland want to hear about. We could care less about a damn Beyonce. Geez,is it that hard to just let Kelly be great for once? I think not.

TALK A GOOD GAME in stores now. I will be back shortly with my full review of one of the best albums of 2013. Bump what the haters, the critics or sales figures say; “TAGG is THAT record. If you don’t have it. GO GET IT. YOU WONT REGRET IT.

    Stay locked for my review.

    • HOWYOULIKEIT June 21, 2013

Unfortunately the comparison wont stop. But Kelly is a great artist though

    • N June 21, 2013

This has been Kelly’s doing too. She and her team should have let interviewer stop asking her about Beyonce and Destiny’s Child; and stop let plp introduce her as a former member of DC. BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT she allowed it. Also, I was hoping that Kelly’s “Dirty Laundry” would have mentioned that she hate person asking her about Beyonce and always linking her to DC but she didn’t. Most recently, Kelly was on “Watch What Happens: Live.” Andy Cohen asked her questions about B dirty laundry.
in this regard ,if she stand for nothing, she will fall for anything.
She has created a web with this song and its hard for her to get out of it.

      • Sensible June 21, 2013

        I agree completely.

    • Anne June 21, 2013

“She has created a web with this song and its hard for her to get out of it. ”
I completely agree. Kelly should not have included any lyrics about Beyonce’s success or how she was down while Beyonce was up and was in her shadow. She had to know that this would be perceived by many as jealousy whether that’s the way she classifies it or not.
She needed attention and took a calculated risk and it backfired. It hasn’t paid off, it only solidified her spot in Beyonce’s shadow just when she seemed to be coming into her own in the industry. The timing was horrible for her own sake and this song doesn’t really update her status by letting the listener know how she got out of the abusive situation and moved past or overcame any feelings of being in Beyonce’s shadow. She had to know the song would lead to even more domination of her interviews with talk about Beyonce and that Beyonce would become the focus in the eyes of many. It was not a smart move in my opinion, and she can only blame herself.

    • Yea Whateva June 21, 2013

@BoneToPick, This is a blog! Leave a short comment/opinion and keep it moving. Not the place for album reviews. Go make your own blog. And the nerve of you to say “I’ll be back with the full review”. That wasn’t the full review you just wrote, rotfl? I can’t with you h**s on here!

      • Excuse you June 21, 2013

Yes. This is a blog, and if this blog allows me to post at length and I have a lot to say, that’s exactly what I’m going to do. I’m so sorry that you have the attention span of a gnat, but if you can’t handle the essay then don’t read it. Maybe if you spent less time on blogs and more time reading books, you’d be able to except, understand and even appreciate a grammatically correct opinion, regardless of how lengthy it may be.
FYI: My post was a rant about how the media is treating this” TAGG” era. My pending REVIEW will focus on the album. Someone close to you should buy you a dictionary for Christmas because you’re clearly lacking in the comprehension department.
Sweety, don’t come for me unless you have the I.Q. to do so.

    • S*** June 21, 2013

B****, aint nobody ask you all that” (quote from Danceflick)

      • S*** June 21, 2013

& to add to that, Kelly doesnt have a strong FANBASE outside of Bey & DC. Bey & DC are her main demographic, Same for Solange, she sold like 300K albums off Bey shadow, nobody would check for her otherwise. Nobdy would be checking for Jermaine or Randy if it werent for Michael. & lets face it Kelly AINT no Janet lol

    • Angela Wesley June 22, 2013

Bone to Pick, I agree with you a !00%. When the song
first came out I had to explained that to one of
my co-work because he said he didn’t like the
song because it was disrespectful to Beyonce.
I kinda told him off and then he change the
subject. The video is going to good. I thought
Keep it between was good but this one might
      be better.

  21. Meena June 21, 2013

    Beautiful

  22. DanYiel Teflon June 21, 2013

Alright Kelendria Rowland!! You better serve great Vocalz!!

  23. TheArtOfLettingGo (johnvidal) June 21, 2013

The video looks great. And obviously Kelly is HOT. I mean this woman always looks gorgeous and she doesn´t age at all.

  24. musik_lover June 21, 2013

Bring on the Dirty Laundry Video!!!

Kelly Talks a Good Game (IMO):

    1. Freak – Talk a Good Game kicks off with a visual kaleidoscope fantasy. Kelly’s commanding vocals on this Jamie Foxx cover (a la “Best Night of My Life”) which was produced by Danja and penned by Rico Love have her asking a potential lover “Can I be your Freak?” Then keeping it real by declaring “Everybody’s somebody’s Freak, the question is whose are you?” 3/5

    2. Kisses Down Low – The flirty lead single from TAGG serves as a nice follow-up to the album opener. Kelly isn’t afraid to let her man know how she likes to be pleased. ‘KDL’ is still blazing urban radio and is a highlight because it is the first track that Kelly has done SOLO handed that has peaked on urban charts. 3/5

    3. Gone (feat. Wiz Khalifa) – Sampling the Joni Mitchell’s song “Big Yellow Taxi” Kelly shows she’s a boss by letting her no good lover know that he’s got to go and his dinner is down the street. Wiz Khalifa adds a nice verse to the track. Probably the most commercial record on the album and is very 3rd single worthy. 4/5

    4. Talk a Good Game (feat. Kevin Cossom) – The title track of the album explains exactly why it earned its title. “I don’t think I can take another broken promise, why do things the hard way when you can just be honest”. This is an album highlight and will probably become a fan favorite because everyone desires someone who is 100% honest and saves all the fluff for someone else. Kevin Cossom lays down some real smooth vocals. 3/5

    5. Down On Love – ‘Love’ happens to be another standout track. This is the confession of the feeling you have after you get fed up of dealing with that person who comes in and out of your life and there’s no clear direction to where the relationship is heading. Kelly’s vocals and ad libs towards the end shine. 4/5

    6. Dirty Laundry – Kelly comes clean on the official 2nd single and does a little laundry. This song sheds light on Ms. Kelly’s personal life. On this personal confessional produced and written by The-Dream Kelly reveals the side effects of an abusive relationship and contrary to popular opinion this song isn’t about jealously of Kelly’s former bandmate/BFF, but instead explains the feelings of uncertainty and low self-esteem for herself. 5/5

    7. You Changed (feat. Beyoncé & Michelle) – Standout Track Alert!!! The heavens have shown DC3 fans some mercy and blessed the world with another mini-reunion on this Harmony production. Kelly takes center stage on the chorus and shines bright. ‘Changed’ reunites Kelly, Bey, & Michelle where they soulfully harmonize about a lover who has shown their true colors and now they “Don’t Want Cha”. 5/5

    8. I Remember – This track is reminiscent of Drake & Rihanna’s “Take Care”, but has a mind of its own. A nice slow production starts the song off gradually building into an EDM infused midtempo that will make anyone and their grandmother recall that love that is no more. 3/5

    9. Red Wine – Half way through the album TAGG decides to mellow things out just a little bit with ‘Wine’ figuratively not literally. The smooth vocals and 70’s/80’s esque midtempo makes you want to dim the lights, grab a wine glass, and pop a bottle open. The irony is that the title has nothing to do with drinking wine at all but rather gives a little foreplay to what may ensue if everything goes as according to plan. Kelly’s vocals sound amazing gliding over this warm delightful track. Best vocal arrangement on the album. 4/5

    10. This Is Love – This is for all the hopeless romantics in the house (raises my hand). ‘This Is Love’ is a beautiful song that has Kelly declaring to her boo that she is truly in love and loves every drop of it and is not afraid to shout it to the world. 3/5

    11. Street Life (feat. Pusha T) – Ms. Kelly picks the pace back up on the Pharrell produced and written sizzling summer jam. This song tackles real economic issues and stereotypes possibly making it an “album dark horse”, but all the while in the background having a gritty and well Pharrell produced track to go along with it. ‘Life’ features a short verse from Pusha T adding to its street flavor. Kelly has said that this has become one of her favs to perform live. Go to YouTube and checkout her GMA performance and find out why. 3/5

    12. Stand In Front of Me – Another Pharrell Williams penned and produced track. ‘Stand’ takes us on a journey back into the 50’s/60’s with this soulful doo wop pop esque song. Kelly lets the reigns go and let’s her man take the lead. She says “He said Stand In Front of Me, Let me palm that a**, Show ’em you’re my girl and that is that…” Nice sweet song. 3/5

    13. Sky Walker (feat. The-Dream) – Get ready to turn up! Make sure you have a fire extinguisher on site to put out any fires lol. Kelly and The-Dream get x-rated on this uber s*** ratchet & possible stripper anthem. The song is about all the things that happen in the bedroom. Kelly sings “You need a main girl that *explicit lyric* you like a side chick”. The-Dream closing the chorus says “I’m so ATL” then Kelly replies “And I’m so Houston baby can’t you tell”. Jesus take the wheel!!! 4/5

    14. Put Your Name On It – If you ever wonder about how to feel if you’re in love with someone please take a listen to ‘PYNOI’. A lovely keyboard orchestra eases the song into the first verse of this stellar track. Kelly is overwhelmed with powerful emotion for her man on this Harmony Samuels penned and produced gem. Sure CLASSIC!!! 5/5

    15. #1 – The Mike WiLL Made-It standout track closes out the deluxe album where Kelly lets it be known that she will never be second and is only #1. 5/5

Album Synopsis: Talk a Good Game is by far Kelly’s best solo offering to date and possibly one of the better R&B albums thus far in 2013. Going back to her R&B/Hip-Hop influenced roots she showcases a new found confidence that translates well into her new music with commanding vocals, sassiness, and grown womanhood. Overall 4/5 (I truly give it a 5/5)

  25. lol June 21, 2013
