For us, the answer to the question above is surprising.
Initially billed as one of the night’s brightest attractions, last night saw Mariah Carey take to the BET Awards only to find her appearance outperformed by the very acts enlisted to help her performance.
Even worse, while the likes of Ciara, Kendrick Lamar and Charlie Wilson scored praise for their contributions to the show, it was Mariah‘s live vocals- or lack of them- that saw her set take the biggest hit.
Though this takes nothing away from her as an icon, it has left many wondering why so little faith has been placed in her star power and voice, that her cause now finds itself strangled by supporting acts who outstay their welcome and prerecorded vocals an act of her calibre should really steer clear from.

I loved it ! Parts of it were live, other parts were li synched. She was NOT the only one last night who lip synched / used backing tracks. Yet, everyone is only calling Mariah out.

Charlie Wilson was the best, that was fire, i love him, Mariah has never been a good performer not even in her good old days, however, at this day and age is unforgivable her lacks of stage presence but what is worse is that she even struggle to lip sync, as i say before for someone as arrogant as she is, she should live up to her greatness, she is becoming a used to be VOCALIST Rihanna, we are now used to it to awful performances.

I have mixed feelings. I don’t think lip syncing is authentic and it’s a poor choice in my opinion. But then again if you can’t pull off a decent vocal rendition or live up to expectations as big as Mariah’s then I can understand why she would consider it. In her situation there is no perfect solution, she would be criticized for sounding bad if she didn’t lip sync. She was in a lose/lose situation because she can no longer come close to recreating live what she is able to manage to put piece together from days of recording in a studio.
The person writing the articles are really trying it though. I thought the inauguration was a much bigger event than the BET awards yet you failed to make a post about the woman who lipped THE NATIONAL ANTHEM there and made one about Mariah and another about Rihanna lipping PIU. I completely agree she lipped 95% of it. If you watch the intro, you can hear when she tries to go one note higher but stops. This mic pick up obviously shows the beginning wasn’t lipped. But yes, after the rapping was completely lipped. No doubt. But who really cares? In that remix, the integrity of the song would be lost had she had thin, live vocals. She’s proved herself for over 20 years and people forget that.

I’ve been a Mariah fan since the beginning. I’ve seen her live twice and met her. The fact is her lip-synching and pre-recorded “live” vocals have been on the increase since the early 2000s. I’ll admit it, its heartbreaking.
In the UK she’s rarely done TV appearances that are live… except X-Factor (which often had recorded ‘money notes’). Funnily enough her single chart stats have slid since the early 2000s too… discounting ‘We Belong Together’ which again, funnily enough DID get a few live versions here and there.
It amazes me that she’s now trying to pull the lip-syncing off in the US… when the vast majority of superstars sing live – and rightly so.
Truth is, no amount of vocal receipts or sales can cover up the mess that was last night. I live in the UK and stayed up late to watch Mariah, for better or worse.
Its a sad day when the only thing you can say about your fave is: “well she looked great….”
Ahh I’m so with you there.., I love Mariah but the lip-syncing is plain embarrassing and for better or worse it absolutely HAS to go. I believe she still has ‘A voice’ if not ‘TheVoice’ but the incessant use of showy studio manipulated vocal tracks taking up the Lion’sShare of the vocal work on stage (when all she has to do is STAND) only serves to highlight the glaring difference between her regular voice and whatever her and her team feel the need to serve to us as ‘real’. It would work better if they just stripped the pyrotechnics and had her perform acoustic alongside a guitarist. I never slate Mariah for her vocals as I’ve said before that I think there has been more going on than the public know of but I refuse to believe that her and her team with all the industry and tour experience they share between them cannot think up a few ways to ensure the performance style actually matches up to the talent level.
It was like death warmed up. She didn’t even have any stage presence to make up for it. People excusing her because she is a ‘legend’ is so basic, like, you should still put effort into your performances and not become complacent just because you have status. You ALWAYS have something to prove if you are performer, you need to exactly that, perform well. That’s like me saying I’ve been in this job for over 20 years so I don’t have to put as much effort in. Nahhhh sorry it doesn’t wash.

She used to be awesome, back when she had Tommy Mottola guiding her career. If Ms. Whitney Houston sang “live” throughout her entire “I Look To You” era, right in the midst of having lost her voice and still managed to give raw, heartfelt performances regardless, then there is absolutely no reason why, these days, Mariah cannot. For better or for worst. There is a huge contradiction in that, especially seeing that Mariah still does have traces of her “old” voice.

Whether or not her voice was at the standard it once was, which it wasn’t, the rawness still shone through.

Honestly no one can get away with lip syncing these days not with every performance being uploaded to YouTube within seconds for everyone to judge. This goes double for singers who can actually sing like Mariah. Real vocalists can’t lip sync because its too obvious. What made it worse is that she did a terrible job at doing it. I think Mariah should just sing over pre-recorded vocals. Christina Aguilera has done it before and most artist do and people don’t mind. As long as she sings live people won’t mind. It would be even better if she sang together with backup singers. IDK, anything is better than not singing at all.

My favorite performance so far has been the Jimmy Fallon one. I love what The Roots did with the song and live instruments always sound better. Plus she was sick that night and went to the doctors before the performance. I have alot of respect for her!

Honestly you can keep posting this videos of her lip syncing but there are more of singing life and doing an amazing job. Every great singer has done it before. Christina lipped performances of Dirrty during the Stripped era, Celine lip syncs, Beyonce has lip synced, Im sure even Barbra Streisand has lip synced. That doesn’t discredit them as great singers with amazing talent though.
Darling, if you’re referring to her 2002 NYC performance I advise you to rewatch it, she was dancing her ass off. Christina has sung over pre-recorded vocals but she RARELY lip syncs and when she does its because she is working the stage. Look up her Dirrty performance at the EMAs that year, she killed it with dancing and vocals. There is no excuse for Mariah to just stand there and mime so badly. She’s never had stage presence but she could’ve at least walked around. It was just shameful. Her voice is truly gone. Chrissy’s voice isn’t what it use to be but she still has her higher register and she still has the power. Just watch her performing at the Grammys for the Aretha tribute or at the People’s Choice Awards performing Blank Page.

Artists do get colds, have vocal rests or have other reasons not to sing live, just like normal people call in sick for work.
