Beyonce Tops Pop Star Movie Debut Chart / Beats Prince & Whitney Houston

Published: Thursday 15th Aug 2013 by David

It’s a move many a musician struggles to make, but it seems finding footing on cinematic territory came all too easy for Pop icon Beyonce, the 17 time Grammy winner with a string of Box Office smashes to her name.

Now, as she gears up to storm the world with her fifth studio album, the star has topped a tally listing the highest grossing leading roles fulfilled by a musician in their big screen debuts…beating Whitney Houston in ‘The Bodyguard’ and Prince in ‘Purple Rain’.

Released on July 26th 2002, ‘Austin Powers in Goldmember‘ boasted a leading role from Beyonce, who’d starred in MTV’s ‘Carmen: A Hip Hop Opera’ a year before.

Now, after generating a mind blowing $213,307,889 at the Box Office since then, Beyonce’s role in the movie now makes it the biggest big screen debut for an Pop star playing a leading role. In this case, that role being that of  the ‘blaxploitation’ inspired Foxxy Cleopatra!

In doing so, she outperforms Whitney Houston‘s starring role in Mick Jackson‘s ‘The Bodyguard’ which generated $25 million in its opening weekend, and the cult classic that is Prince‘s ‘Purple Rain’, directed by Albert Magnoli– starring the performer himself and Apollonia Kotero.
