By all accounts, Jennifer Hudson’s third studio album is shaping up to be quite the masterpiece.
Enlisting the likes of Red One and Salaam Remi to help craft it, we had hoped the project would see her birth a Jill Scott meets Paloma Faith esque piece that would see her strike Adult Contemporary ground, winning over an older (and far more loyal) audience while doing so.
However, it appears the release will see the Oscar nabbing Grammy winner strike a healthy balance between Dance and Soul. Well, that is if her brand new effort ‘I Can’t Describe The Way I Feel’ is anything to go by.
Peep the Pharrell produced T.I. assisted number below…
We love it!
Showcasing the treasure that is her voice while still scoring a 10 on the ‘sing along’ scale, ‘The Way I Feel’ is an undeniable hit.
In saying that, we do hope the only cuts that sound like this on the album are the singles.
For, as Tamar Braxton, K.Michelle and TGT would agree, today’s R&B may enjoy the Dance single but is unlikely to pick up an entire album that feels like ‘Feel’, more inclined to support mid-tempo to ballad driven releases.
Perhaps, Camp Jen hope to use numbers like the above to win over Top 40 radio and score successes on the Hot 100, as to generate the buzz for an album in ways only a hit single can.
However, as someone who has the potential to be a major album’s seller, we’d say its radio ready ballads and not hit singles Hudson should be aiming for- especially in a world which is increasingly/continually gravitating towards the likes of Emeli Sande, Alicia Keys and Miguel.
