That Grape Juice A&R: Brandy’s Seventh Studio Album

Published: Monday 21st Oct 2013 by David

Back in September, R&B veteran Brandy revealed her plans to release a brand spanking new album- announcing the news exclusively to That Grape Juice.Net and our pals over at Muscialize!

Marking the follow up to 2012’s ‘2/11‘, confirmation of the release has many a ‘Star’ eyeing a 2014 release for the studio project, taking to many a forum / social media outlet to share the ideas they feel would make this project her biggest and best to date.

Now, That Grape Juice does a little weighing in of its own via our ‘That Grape Juice A&R‘ feature, which sees us share our ideas for future releases set to be launched by our favourite acts.

All the details below…

Listing 12 songs from any genre or period of music from any artist out there, we want you to create the ultimate Brandy album made up of cuts you feel would serve to win over the general public and critics alike.

Not sure what we mean? Peep our track list / guideline and share your own below!

1.  Cheryl Cole – Call My Name…

2. SWV – ‘Right Here (Human Nature Mix)…

3. Madonna – ‘Human Nature’…

4. Janelle Monae – ‘Electric Lady’…

5. Mel B – ‘I Want You Back (Ft Missy Elliott)’…

6. Lauryn Hill – ‘Ex Factor’…

7. Elijah Blake – ‘Vicky’s Secret (Durand Bernarr Remix)’…

 8. Paloma Faith – ‘New York’…

Promotional ideas

‘Brandy’s Best (A ‘Sunday Best’ BET Special)’:

Brandy joins the contestants and judges of this season’s ‘Sunday’s Best‘ to cover her favourite Gospel numbers in front of a live studio audience.

‘Moesha: The Reunion Special’:

Brandy joins the cast of hit UPN series ‘Moesha‘ in the character’s iconic kitchen to count down their favourite moments from their time on the show. Launched to coincide with the Amazon release of Moesha‘s Season 2 – 6 DVD box sets, fans who purchase the release can pre-order Brandy‘s forthcoming studio album for the limited price of $3.49!

Or, if box set release shares the same release date as the LP, fans who purchase the former while downloading the latter as part of the ‘Brandy Bundle‘ will be able to so at a discounted price.

Live Performance Lyric Videos:

With digital streams now counting towards the ever coveted Billboard Hot 100 chart positions, there’s never been a more important time for acts to up the ante on a visual front to score a fighting chance on the tally.

With this in mind, what better way than to add a fresh twist to the traditional lyric video released before the official music video, by scrapping the traditional ‘words on a screen’ and opting for a live performance set, which’d see the cut’s lyrics run across the bottom of the screen during the in studio set!

For an act whose live skills don’t get half of the acclaim they deserve, this’d be perfect way to not only sell the song but Brandy the live entertainer- wind machine, out of this world vocals, Frank Gatson choreography and all!

This, driving the general public to the video and giving them ample reason to return enough times to secure a favourable chart placing for the number….and tiding fans over until the release of its official music video!

See below!

The above stand as just three of our ideas, so- if you’re feeling just as creative as we are- why not share your ideas with us.

Who knows, someone from Camp Norwood may just see them and take them on board!

 Weigh in below!

You cannot manufacture a ‘perfect’ album.
A good album is one which is good on it’s own terms, not because it is similar to previous songs. These posts are redundant.

    • MCThePlaceToBe October 20, 2013

Loool. You know nothing about the industry then. This is exactly how they do it. Why do you think Selena Gomez and Rita Ora albums are full of Rihanna reject songs.

      • Selenator October 20, 2013

Out of 4 albums, Selena has only accepted one song that was meant for Rihanna. You tried though.

      • MCThePlaceToBe October 20, 2013

Sweetheart, Selena’s entire career is modelled on Rihanna’s Loud era so please take the nearest available seat.

    • Anon October 20, 2013

You can’t manufacture a perfect album? That’s probably why your faves albums always sound a mess hunty. I don’t like all their songs choices but everyone knows that RLs sit down and decided on a sound and then reference other songs to help producers understand what they want.

  3. DiamondMarina October 20, 2013

LOVE LOVE LOVE! But I would have added more Pop songs, she needs hits.

  4. SoGone4Monica October 20, 2013

Hmmmm. This was very interesting so I hope she sees this.

  5. ItsCheryl2bh October 20, 2013

She shouldn’t put out an album if she doesn’t have the money to promote it 2bfair.

  6. Ju don’t even know October 20, 2013

Me likely but I agree with that other user on how she needs more pop hits.

  7. credits October 20, 2013

Maybe they can at least feature one of her songs on BET’s ‘the game’ during an episode or something.

    • BeyWhouWanna October 20, 2013

Good idea but that won’t be enough. The only way it would work is if it was the premiere episode.

      • credits October 20, 2013

Yea i was thinking that it would be best on the premiere but even if there was a little promotional message afterwards, “tonights music featured on the game was blah blah blah by Brandy, purchase it on itunes now…”

      • BeyWhouWanna October 20, 2013

        Yasss sis! That’s so true.

  8. Woman2Woman October 20, 2013

    I frickin adore this.

  9. AubreyOSlay October 20, 2013

I’m living for the idea to bundle the album with the Moesha DVDs.

  10. credits October 20, 2013

Brandy can have a very emotional dark tone, and she can emote well when singing about sad subjects on such songs as, “who’s the loser now,” “perfect love,” “porcelain doll” & “after the flood” which will compliment the dark/cold feeling of the production. She should explore this more.

  11. KissesForKelly October 20, 2013

Brandy deadass needs to hire TGJ because the second idea is giving me all kinds of Adele 21 promo fever.

  12. RebelleMichelle October 20, 2013

I see where they’re going with this is. Brandy always makes good albums but her songs aren’t hits so that’s what she needs this era. Plus, her album songs can be a bit boring and they can’t get played on radio so I like all the songs you listed except for Madonna’s HM.

  13. R&Brandy October 20, 2013

This site is actually the s***. Who else would take this much time to do all of this, you can tell they really care for her.

  14. doubline47 October 20, 2013

She needs to do kind of pop-rock feel album, rnb brings no money this days.

    • Dave October 20, 2013

Pop rock? I don’t agree. She needs to be Urban Pop BUT go for an adult audience with the albums songs and the Pop audience with the Urban pop singles.

  15. FullMooner October 20, 2013

Someone put this on the Brandy forum.

  16. IKNOWTHETRUTH October 20, 2013

Brandy does great with showcasing her stellar set of pipes but this diva needs to be back on the map with some hits. She needs more crossover material to bring her music career back to the top. “Let Me Go” and “Wish Your Love Away” from her last album should have been singles. They would have helped push the album closer to gold.

  17. JanetXone October 20, 2013

I love this article for two reasons.

    1. It acknowledges that Brandy needs hit songs.
    2. The bundle.

  18. rocky October 20, 2013

sigh… yall wasting yalls time…EVERYTHING IS IN GODS TIMING…how many times will grapejuice and brandy stans PLAN her comeback…man will never force whats not meant to be…sighs again”

    • BrandyBrandyBrandy October 20, 2013

I believe in God too but does that mean you sit down doing nothing because you’re waiting for God to make moves for you. The second you take action to help yourself you have to understand that IS part of God’s timing.

    • SoGone4Monica October 20, 2013

If everyone thought like you everyone would stay in their houses doing nothing all day.
God wants us to get up and help ourselves and i think it’s nice that TGJ are trying to help Brandy help herself.

    • Draggin4MrsCarter October 20, 2013

    • WildestDreamer October 20, 2013

Brandy wants to sell her albums the old fashioned way Rocky. Her husband wants her to do that too, that’s why he doesn’t plan on buying it for her. #Catchtheaccurateshade

      • Stephen October 20, 2013

dummy, Brandy does not have a husband yet

  19. Lana Del Slay October 20, 2013

Brandy has to see all of this.

  20. flopppppppppppp October 20, 2013

It will flop for sure so who cares?

    But anyway:

1st single should be called: Shut Up And Drive
2nd single should be called: Wheel of the World

    • Stephen October 20, 2013

shut up, you need to be worrying how you will pay your next rent, broke f**

  21. BEYHIVE October 20, 2013

A perfect brandy Album would be:

    1. Sweet Nothings
    2. Afrodisiac
    3. Let Me Go
    4. Can You Hear Me Now?
    5. 1st & Love
    6. Open
    7. Focus
    8. Put It Down
    9. I Tried
    10. No Such Thing As Too Late
    11. Say You Will
    12. Full Moon
    13. What You Need
    14. Tomorrow
    15. Come A Little Closer
    16. Should I Go

    SINGLES:

    1. Sweet Nothings
    2. Let Me Go
    3. Full Moon
    4. Put It Down

Above All Brandy needs to do more promo also she needs to release more than 2 singles per album.

    • yesssssssssss October 20, 2013

great songs you listed. i love me some Brandy!

  22. Career Ender October 20, 2013

She must make a Full Moon + Human

When You touch Me, Camouflage etc.

Brandy is one talented artist. Her songs very great! I just love her, she’s everything

  23. rIhanna is BIGGER THN BEYONCE EVER WAS October 20, 2013

She has not got the edgy and s** appeal to pull of human nature. I feel it sad, that bigger A list names did not pay tribute to her. Beyonce should of said something, As should Puffy, Usher and etc. Rihanna listened to Brandy’s 1998 LP before she made GGGB. She should of tweeted something.

It is sad how African americans have let her fall off. Something tells me if she were beyonce’s skintone, she would be like Halle. Halle has not had a hit in years, but black men and women still hold her in the highest regards.

    • XXX October 20, 2013

Should have>>>>> should of. Maybe you should worry about that education first not who is tributing Brandy.

    • Stephen October 20, 2013

Rihanna is not bigger than Brandy ever WAS, stop lying

      • Monica Stan October 20, 2013

        Do you mean Beyoncé?^

    • BITCHPLEASEEEEE October 20, 2013

BITCPLEASESSS BEY DOESN’T EVEN ACKNOWLEDGED HER FANS THAT GETS HER WHERE SHE IS LET ALONE BRANDY. I WOULDN’T WASTE MY BREATH FOR THAT.<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< 🙁

    • thetruth October 20, 2013

I don’t think it has anything to do with her skin tone. Fantasia sells records with no problem as well as JHud. Halle Berry is a s** symbol always has been and forever will be to men… to be completely honest Brandy just isn’t s*** even though she’s tryn to be so nowadays. I think she tries to be like Beyonce & Kelly Rowland and the other females tht has s** appeal thinking it will help her sale more records and gain more fans. Brandy just needs to be herself… tht’s what bothered me this era about her. Take Monica for example… she’s a very pretty woman but she could never be a s** symbol bcuz she’s never been tht… it would be so awkward.. & I dn’t think it matters tht A Listers didn’t congratulate Brandy; as long as she was recognized for being in the industry 20yrs thts all tht matter.

    • credits October 20, 2013

this could have just been an issue with the film maker not being able to tap rihanna and beyonce. They’re always traveling and what not. they’ve acknowledged her before.

  24. rih rox((U mad Bro?)) October 20, 2013

    I smell a flop 🙁

  25. Dev October 20, 2013

I dont think that those ideas are good. Nobody will be interested in a Moesha boxset this late in the game and the album bundle is not a big seller, especially as she is now with a different label and has released a best of album.

The suggestion of songs dont really work and i think to use Cheryl Cole as an inspiration, because what works for one doesn’t work for another (Leona Lewis would’ve never had success with We Found Love or Burn) and the nearest to that “sound” was Put it Down
People talk about brandy doing pop, but she doesn’t have a pop voice so i dont think she would pull it off as fans will be expecting the Brandy sound with harmonies (Ciara had the same problem with completely changing a sound and then losing her identity and fan base)
I think that the best idea is for Brandy to hook up with Sia, Emile Sande and Linda Perry and Alicia Key’s (Christina’s Impossible) for songwriting as well as Harmony, Mike Will and Pharell as well as Kanye again to see what they can cook up… Oh, and maybe the dream and Mark Ronson.

    • TK October 20, 2013

Ok I Cosign everything you just said!!! THIS ALBUM WOULD BE FIRREE!!!

  26. IKNOWTHETRUTH October 20, 2013

“1st & Love” was such a great song from ‘Human’ album and would have saved that entire project. I don’t know what she was thinking not releasing that. It was picking up radio airplay in the DMV area.

  27. royalkev October 20, 2013

    • royalkev October 20, 2013

Take off #13 (I repeated it twice).

  28. Monica Stan October 20, 2013

    Great track list.

  29. Keri Krew Kween October 20, 2013

Brandy needs to have hits on this album to sell it. I’m not talking about some EDM Dr.Luke type s***, but something urban and radio friendly like Ci-errors Body Party or Ariana’s The Way. It’s got to be fresh and most importantly she needs a solid team behind her. With good promo she could be selling like Tamar. But if people aren’t checking for her she’ll see Ci-error type results.

  30. IKNOWTHETRUTH October 20, 2013

“Louboutins” would have been great for Brandy due to the vocal power she has. I didn’t care for it as a Jennifer Lopez record.

  31. JER October 20, 2013

Omg. Ok. STOP. What will it take to get thru to Brandy’s 5 and a half stans that NO ONE is checking for her. Just let it go. After the drama of 211 it’s officially over. This is her 3rd flop album in a row. It’s not going to happen. It’s been over a decade since her last hit.

If the massive push for 211 wasn’t enough for her to make anything pop, what else will it take? There was so much hype for 211 and her Team just dropped the ball, threw it actually. I wasn’t the only one honestly looking forward to a Brandy comeback but if her and her team think a few performances and 2 singles was gonna cut it. Ch…. BYEEE!!!!!!!!! The album was also a little disappointing musically.

I’m not the only one that isn’t looking forward to ThatFLOPjuice pushing Brandy YET AGAIN…smh.. And I will NAWT sit thru ANOTHER round of Brandy stans talking up her upcoming flop album as the second coming to be left laughing when I really don’t wanna be laughing. Everyone loves Brandy, but it’s become a joke honestly. Just tour Brandy and collect your money. Wait…

    • Charlie October 21, 2013

For me a flop is a rubbish album. Miley & Katy make generic music inspired by other people so you’re basically just buying the same music sung by someone else.
Brandy isn’t a flop because she has never made a bad album, Brandy makes music that is Brandy and no-one else because i can never imagine anyone singing her songs.
Brandy’s carrer is appreciated, she already hit the big time in a major way and still has fans. Brandy music is like an elusive designer or a film that has cult status where they are embraced by the true connoisseurs.
Some people are just happy to make music. Solange makes music she wants and plays at glastonbury with thousands singing her songs. Brandy do your thing

  32. ASIPOFBRANDY October 20, 2013

Brandy needs Sonja, Rodney and LaShawn Daniels !!!!

    • Sion October 21, 2013

Rodney needs Rodney version 90’s to 00’s because as far as i’m concerned he hasn’t been hot for a while.

  33. mmhmm October 20, 2013

TheSunday’s best idea is smart but she also should hit Ellen and the view and any place to get her face seen and music heard the albums are good to great everytime. I still think she needs a “have you ever” type song as a single

  34. credits October 20, 2013

OKAY LISTEN BRANDY, CAUSE I KNOW YOU ARE WATCHING, GIVE US A PRE-ALBUM MIXTAPE/EP to add to the buzz of the next album. Put ‘make belief’ and ‘can’t cope’ on there. “it was fire, then the rain came, no desire, you don’t look the same, i get higher to cope with the pain” I NEED…correction…THE WORLD needs to hear the rest of that lol.

  35. Free Spirit October 20, 2013

Brandy’s “Two Eleven” didn’t do well because:

1.) it was too sexualized – when the album was supposed to reflect her growth as a artist and dedication to Whitney.

2.) not promoted enough – paying too much attention to “The Game” instead of her album.

3.) wrong singles were released – she should’ve released: 1st single: “Put It Down (Featuring: Chris Brown)” was a good choice… 2nd single: “Do You Know What You Have”… 3rd single: Slower… 4th single: “Without You”… 5th single: “Let Me Go” with good choreo.

4.) and last but not least – she should’ve wrote more on the album instead of “co-writing” 3 songs and she should’ve rapped on the album as well.

TBA: 7th album (a list of songs that would be amazing if they were her songs)
1.) Intro – kinda like the intro from “Never Say Never”.
2.) End Of Time – Beyoncé
    3.) Body Party – Ciara
    4.) 4 Page Letter – Aaliyah
    5.) I Wanna Know – Joe
6.) Rain On Me – Ashanti
7.) Adore You – Miley Cyrus
8.) Have You Ever? – Brandy
    9.) Without You – Brandy
10.) My Kind Of Love – Emeli Sandé
    11.) Impossible – Shontelle
    12.) Diamonds – Rihanna
13.) Someone Like You – Adele

And I would love if Brandy used samples from:
Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, and even Herself!!!

    • Sion October 21, 2013

Sexualised!? apart from Paint this House & put it down which were both so subtle, how was it sexualised?
Then you suggest Body Party as a direction?
Promo doesn’t play a part because Ciara had hella promo and still did badly.
Brandy used MJ sample on Full Moon, the song Its Not Worth It

      • Free Spirit October 22, 2013

Ummm… Her album was said to be about life and growth… And not just “Put It Down” and “Paint This House”… It was also “Slower”, “Can You Hear Me?”, and “Let Me Go”… You tried though!!!… And I meant the production of “Body Party” and I meant a hard hitting sample more up-tempo… “Full Moon” was also good album too and I know that she sample Michael, which I meant she do more of especially from: Michael, Whitney, Aaliyah, and Even herself!!! Thank you very much.

  36. Pink Rose October 21, 2013

I think the songs Brandy should do for this TBA Album would be
    1. Diamonds by Rihanna
    2. 1+1 by Beyonce
    3. Life Guard by Brandy (She Kills It)
    4. Where I Stood by LeAnn Rimes
    5. This Is Love by Kelly Rowland
    6. It Won’t Stop by Sevyn Streeter
    7. Sound Of Love by Tamar Braxton
    8. Fire by Michelle Willams
    9. Unbreak My Heart by Toni Braxton
    10. Ready For Love by India Arie
    11. Loved Me Back To Life by Celine Dion
    12. How Will I by LeAnn Rimes
    Deluxe Version
    13. Special Delivery by Bridget Kelly
    14. Ex Factor by Lauryn Hill
    15. It Kills Me by Melanie Fiona
    16. In Deep by Fantasia

  37. NO(Halo My Name) October 21, 2013

Ya’ll using all these stupid song. Brandy has some awesome unreleased tracks.
    1. Porcelain
    2. Casualties
    3. Love me the most
    4. Stupid In Love
    5. Drum Life
    6. Escape
    7. Freedom
    8. Sweet nothings
    9. Doesn’t really matter
    10. Keyed
    11. Supreme

^All these tracks are unreleased from and these songs are better than anything from Human and 2/11

    • Sion October 21, 2013

Disagree. Stupid in Love was then recorded by Rihanna and on Rated R

  38. Go indie brandy! with love October 21, 2013

I’ve seen nothing but excuses and as a brandy fan i’ve made them myself..The truth of the matter is some artist simply last long, but what they choose to do with their time is completely up to them. Brandy peaked early and has been struggling post Full Moon every since, actually full moon was not that big of an album and only continues to be promoted only by stans.Brandy hasn’t had one terrible album yet, but the proof is in the pudding and it’s says maybe releasing another album wouldn’t be the most financially responsible thing unless she becomes an independent artist. It takes money to create album and if you aren’t making a profit for a record label, why waste their time and yours? This huge comeback though just isn’t going to happen and the sooner the actual “Starz” come to terms with this, the less hostile they will be.2/11 isn’t that great either, I mean she went from people like David Foster and Rodney jerkins producing her material to chris brown and you label that great? Afrodisiac>Full Moon>Never Say Never>Human>Self-Titled Debut>2/11 and that’s the \ truth.

  39. IDK October 21, 2013

I think a perfect Brandy album would be a continuation of 211 with a few more up beat songs like “put it down” and “let me go” But stick to that good ole R&B like you been doing Brandy! I liked the human album for what it was but no smh. Brandy is R&B!

  40. Todd October 21, 2013

I hate that all everybody is talking about is sales like anyone really sales these days u can count on one hand how many R&B acts sold 100k the first week.. Why are y’all being so hard on her?? Two Eleven was great… I just want great music… We get so caught up on popularity and sales we forget about the music! Wake up people

  41. MUSICHEAD October 21, 2013

I’m not feeling any of these ideas. The music has never been the issue. The problem has been the promotion. RCA needs to step their game up this go round and give this next project a priority budget cuz all the hits in the world won’t save this album if no one hears them.

  42. Michael October 21, 2013

    Brandy’s team is tripping!!

Even if she had to pay for it out my own pocket (which I know she can afford), she needs to shoot a video for Do You Know & Without You… She missed opportunites to really strech her album out and get more sales… I’m telling you, people who hadnt bought the album would atleast by the singles if they were released..

Do You Know video should have been a nice s*** video, with a possible remix w/ Drake or Usher [both could have brought something fresh to it].. Without You video could have been something visually stunning or she could have even made the BET Honors performance a live video [i.e. Beyonce-Dangerously in Love]

Come on now. I hate when artist just let GOOD/AMAZING music go unheard… Why does she think it will be any different with next album if she doesnt let this one reach its full potential.

And I know it’s not totally Brandy decision but come on, you should have some say at this point in your career. And if not, then she has to start investing into her self.

  43. Talented October 21, 2013

I don’t think Brandy has ever really been in control of her career. She’s been a [talented] puppet for 20 years now. She needs creative freedom to do things HER WAY for once.

  44. King October 21, 2013

For Brandy’s album I would love for her to do music with live instrumentation. I would also love for her to do more songs like “Without You” where her voice will be out at the forefront and less editing is done with her voice. As far as promotion goes I would love for her to be at more award shows performing and release at LEAST four singles instead of the usual two. Whatever she does, I’m sure it’ll be great. She always surprises me.

I pray that by some miracle Brandy reads this even though I’m late, lol. I think her performance with Jesse J at the itunes festival says it all. Hello RCA. Wake up and smell the coffee. Everything from that outfit she wore to the vocals in that performance was flawless, and the younger generation loved it. I think her next album should represent RnB but have a little rock edge to it. She needs songs that she can really dance to. Put It Down was ok as a performance song but I think she can have better dance routines and performances. And can we please get at least one powerful ballad on this album? She hasn’t had any since the song Finally from Afrodisiac. Human did not go in the right direction as far as how to give Brandy a pop sound. I think she can do it with this new album. It’s sad it takes Brandy performing at someone else’s show for her record label to see how relevant she is and the potential she has. She could blend very well into the edgy, high fashion pop rock scene. Her label just doesn’t see it. Afrodisiac and Human are good, but her albums could be a lot better.Use “Conquer the World” as a template.

I think brandy’s last album was very good. I loved every song on there but.. i hope she reads this because i am a huge brandy fan. I think she should work with mike will made it again he is one of the best producers right now. And i think she should work with missy elliott/ timbaland for some 90’s sounding songs. Also she should work with hit-boy, detail, the runners, Rico love, and polow da don. Now with that line up you bound to have a bangin album. Also have more features and more club songs or songs you can bang in the car. Bring that chardonnay attitude to this album. Oh and work with bangladesh again and the dream love you brandy i will always support you.
