Retirement.
In recent years, it’s a topic routinely brought up following most Britney Spears performances; and a topic debated even more so these days following the singer’s lack of promotion for new album ‘Britney Jean’.
Reps for the star’s upcoming Las Vegas residency ‘A Piece Of Me’ claim that the nature of the star’s deal means she is unable to perform anywhere in the US during the show’s two-year run. Not any award show, not a tour. Nothing. Much to the disappointment of fans.
Yet with “disappointment” being the general consensus anytime Spears takes to the stage, even sects of her loyalest supporters believe it best she takes an indefinite break.
Interestingly, the big “r” seems to be on Britney’s mind too. Peep her new interview with Extra’s Mario Lopez after the jump…
Legit or a promo ploy to whip up interest in ‘Jean’ – which is set to debut with the lowest first week numbers of Spears’ career? After all, branding it as Britney’s potential “last album” creates a buzz and urgency around the project that its preceded singles ‘Work B*tch’ and ‘Perfume’ could not.
In any case, we’re all for a bow out of the spotlight – if the 32-year old isn’t able to up her performance ante from what its been in recent years. Do we expect her to have the agility of 10 years ago? We’re inclined to say “no”, but in an era where the Beyonce‘s of the world are actually getting better with time, the actual answer is “why not?”. Indeed, many forget that Madonna was 31 (and had been around for more than 10 years) when she released ‘Vogue’. Why should the rules be any different for Britney?
Yes, yes, she’s had quite serious personal battles. But, the fact remains: the music industry is a business. And a competitive one at that. As such, if Britney can’t deliver, maybe it’s time to call it a career.
