Beyonce’s claims of being a songwritter have been suspecious since the destiny’s child album “Survivor”, where she received 18 song ang producer credits. More than once there were romours that her father got the credits as he was on plan to astablish his daughter’s solo career. Most notably, the songs “Brown eyes” was the creation of Walter Afanasif (famous for his classical pop work with Mariah Carey and Celine Dion in the 90s), but beyonce’s name appears on the credits list.
It all started to properly appear that Beyonce is not a songwritter in the period following her second solo album “B’Day”. She herself say sthe album was created in 3 weeks with 72 songs made. The obvious question is whether this is possible. Yet again her name appears in almost all the songs on the album as songwriter.
Neyo started the flames when he found out that beyonce had claimed to have written the song, obviously he retaliated at this afront by going public with his, VERBATUM.
In the same album (B’day), Beyonce covered a song by British singer-songwriter De’seree called Still in love(Kissing you) from the movie Shakespear in Love. She had asked for permission to cover the song but she was told not to change any lyrics in the song or release a music video for it. As you all know she did both, and adding her name on the songwriting credits list to boot. She was subsequently, and successfully, sued by De’seree and was ordered to cease the release of the song in the Delux edition of the album B’day AND pay $150 000. Even today , some youtube links to the beyonce version of this song are blocked due to the copywrite enfringement.
The song “resentment” was released in 2004 by Victoria Beckham and written by Walter W. Millsap III and Candice Nelson with a guitar cord sample by the great Curtis Mayfield. The song turned up two years later on B’day, exactly the same but alas Beyonce’s name was on the credits list for minor changes to the song at the end!
Similarly for the song “Lay up under me”, it was released in 2008 by Shaun Garret by maraculously appeared on her fourth album “4” with her name etting primary songwriting credit. This fits the trend because all of the songs on “4” either existed before she recorded them or they were written by someone else who was on a payroll.
Rob Fusari has also spoken about how Beyonce in an interview with Barbra Walters said she came up with the idea and lyrics for “bootylicious”, Matthew responded with an arrogant and pompous reply of “fans dont care who writes or produces the song, they want to believe that the artist did it”. This response is rubbish and is something that only be said by someone who is not a musician but a manager.
Of the 5 USA #1 hits she probably only co-wrote 2 (single ladies and check on it), the other 3 (irriplaceable, crazy love and babay boy) were not written NOR produced by her.
The composers award that is used by Beyonce fans as a defence against these accusations is a very weak one because the composers association only takes into account the artists album liner notes, no questions. And it is clear that the liner notes are not an accurate or reliable indication of the rightful songwriters who deserve credit. Also you must consider the power, influence and impact that Matthew Knowles has in the music industry as a factor into who celebrates and who doesnt celebrate his daughter that he’s devoted almost all his middle life into turning into a money making pop star.
This is evidence that this woman clearly pays songwriters to include her name in the song so she can further capitalise from the song’s success because of teh power her name commands. This may sound valid in the music business but it is not right at all and the American music industry needs to come up with laws that prohibit big name stars from bullying non-famous producers. It needs to made illigal.
However there have been occasions where Beyonce either hasn’t gotten a credit for songwriting or simply didn’t look for one since the collaborator is a big name artist/producer. The song “put it in a love song” with Alicia Keys, “telephone” with Lady Gaga and “I was here” which was written by the great Diane Warren. Diane Warren is known for her strict stance on songwriting ownership and publishing royalties, and it is a safe bet to say that had Beyonce attempted a forced songwriting credit, we most likely would have never heard her rendition of “I was here”.
Frank Ocean once tweeted that producers don’t like artists who claim credits they did not have anything to do with except when it’s beyonce. The irony there is very obvious if you know the story behing his song “I miss you”.
When the oscar for best original song nominees included the songwriters fro “Listen” Beyonce’s name was not part of the list of people who were going to get the Oscar because she didn’t write the song but on her album “B’day” it appears in the songwriting credtis.
That was long. But that is clear, objective non-biased evidence against Beyonce’s claim of being a songwriter/co-writer. It is up to you to use common sense and come to a conclusion. Denial of evidence indicates severe delusion.
This is not to discredit Beyonce’s obvious talent, but it is to do right by those people who help her convey her talent by giving her material to perform for her fans. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH SINGING A SONG THAT YOU DID NOT WRITE. What is wrong is claiming credit for efforts for which you are not responsible for, it is plagerism and it is the single greatest crime in the entire canon of written work or art. Whiteney Houston, Mariah Carey and Celine Dion have become astronomically successful female solo vocal artists from singing songs they did not write but they are still filthy rich and they did not have to steal credit for them.

Producer is dettached from writer. Production is anything that made the song into existance other than the lyrical content.

Yes like I said in my first comment it´s easy to tell who is a songwriter and who isn´t, just by the way they talk about their music, albums and songs. Beyonce or Rihanna harly ever talk about the real deal, the music. All the artists I mentioned before do, it´s easy to tell, it´s a passion they have.
On the other hand people need to understand a songwriter doesn´t just write the lyrics, that´s not the most difficult thing, all of us could write some words right? Especially lyrics as slutty as Drunk in Love. But the melodies and the rest of things that make a song are more important to make it great or bad. So a song having basic lyrics doesn´t mean Beyonce could have written it, cos there´s more to it than just the lyrics. Again I think she might help in some of her songs, but she´s no real songwriter as everybody understands what a real songwriter is.

I remember when Beyonce said on a show that she wrote the song Emotions and was then reminded by the presenter that it was actually a Bee Gee song that she had covered.
