LeToya Luckett Covers ‘Rolling Out’ / Dishes On Destiny’s Child, Insecurities, & “Second Lead Vocalist”

Published: Friday 18th Apr 2014 by Sam

LeToya Luckett has quite the hustle factor.

The singer-actress has spent much the last year jugging both passions; appearing on recently revived dramedy ‘Single Ladies’  and piecing together her third studio album ‘Until…Then’.

33-year-old Luckett celebrates her journey in the latest issue of Rolling Out magazine, who she also spoke to about some of the struggles she faced while on the rise. The Houston-bred beauty also dished on her time in Destiny’s Child and the “second lead vocalist” comment that went viral recently.

Peep her stunning cover above and quotes below…

On Her Time In Destiny’s Child:

“A lot of people ask me about my past. It’s part of my life so I expect people to ask certain questions. Maybe they’re curious. At the end of the day, I don’t let it get me down. It was a wonderful time in my life and I’m blessed that I was able to be a part of one of the biggest girl groups known to man. I don’t take those moments for granted and I expect it. I know people are going to have those questions.”

On “That” Second Lead Vocalist Comment:

“That video was so funny! I laughed! When did that even happen — and look at my face! I was just giving shade! But I think we were all tired. But people thought it was one thing and it really wasn’t. What Kelly was saying was true. Everybody knew their position. That’s why the group worked.”

On Her Past Insecurities:

“I had things about myself that I [didn’t] like. I [would always say] ‘I wish I had this, I wish I had that.’ I used to have this thing about my legs. If you look at all of the Destiny’s Child albums from when I was a part of the group, you never saw me in a skirt. I was always the one who wore the pants, because I felt like my legs were too skinny.

You want your boobs to grow; you want all kind of things to happen. Eventually things fill out — and sometimes they fill out too much!

The glare of the spotlight only amplifies insecurities. People like to pick at your imperfections and that can be very hard on you as a person. I think a lot of times people forget that we’re human beings and some of us are fighting self-esteem issues already. I love Instagram and Twitter and I think it’s awesome that fans can connect with their favorite artists, but it also gives them a chance in that comment box to say what they really feel about them. Be confident in who you are and who God made you to be. I can’t pay attention to it. I’d go crazy out here.”

On Her Foray Into Acting:

“I was kind of thrown into this [acting] thing. My first audition was [the 2010 Christian drama] Preacher’s Kid. Four days before the shoot date, they called and asked me if I wanted to play the lead role. I had not done a movie before — [so] to carry a movie on my back on my own with no training, no nothing? I hadn’t been to school for this! But God had a plan for me. An acting coach, Troy Rowland, guided me through that whole thing. Since then I have been bitten by the bug and I am head-over-heels in love with it. I’m passionate about it. I study; I go to classes. I just want to get better and better and I think with each experience — movie, TV show or whatever — I grow. But it’s harder than it looks. I have a whole new appreciation for my favorite actors now. It’s a wonderful thing to be able to do. And I’m blessed to even have the opportunity to grow in it.”

More power to Ms. Luckett. Here’s hoping her album arrives sooner rather than later.
