If not for a last minute decision made by its production team, R&B supergroup En Vogue would scored a starring spot in RomCom ‘Think Like a Man 2′, it has emerged today.
How moviegoers missed out on catching the ladies in the Kevin Hart-led flick?
Details below…
After spending a total of 2,800 weeks on the US’ ‘Billboard’ charts, the group’s 1992 hit ‘My Lovin’ (You’re Never Gonna Get It)’ was written into the ‘Think Like a Man Too’ script by screenwriters Keith Merryman and David Newman.
Penned by Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy, the songs inclusion in the movie would have seen their number reintroduced to its audience and see both writers (or its copyright owners) grant the movie a music synchronisation license to ‘Screen Gems‘, the flicks production company who would then be obliged to pay a sizeable licensing fee for the song’s use.
Unfortunately, none of the above came to pass. For, after getting their hands on its original script, director Tim Story and producer Will Story pull the song from the project, and replace it with Bell Biv Devoe‘s ‘Poison.’
Newman reveals:
The original idea was to use En Vogue’s ‘My Lovin’ (Never Gonna Get It)’ and have Wendi belt out the very end, but ultimately it came down to Tim and Will’s decisions. Tim’s the video guy.
‘The Hollywood Reporter’ adds:
“My Lovin’ ” was released in 1992 and peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts (though it hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot R&B Singles chart). 1990’s “Poison” peaked at No. 3 on the Hot 100 and also topped the R&B Singles chart. “We couldn’t even imagine it not being ‘Poison’ now. We knew the best idea would ultimately win,” says Merryman. After getting the cast onboard with the new song and routine, they recorded the song first in a music studio and shot the video scenes over a span of two days. “That song is just a classic and I also knew that if we just gave the audience enough visuals it would definitely be more exciting than just watching some people on stage sing or just dancing around,” director Tim Story tells THR. For Story, the Think Like a Man sequel was the perfect platform for showcasing his music video expertise. Story began his career directing videos for acts like India.Arie, ’N Sync and Tyrese in the late ’90s. “When that sequence was coming together, I just thought, wow, people are going to have a lot of fun with the music video and just visually it just made that section really fun. I’m really excited that people are responding the way they did to it,” he says.
Since its June 20th 2014 release, ‘Man’ has generated $50,381,737 at the Box office.
Great for Divoe…not so much for En Vogue.
It’s not as though they would have seen a penny of it. They didn’t write it.
They would have made money if they were like your fav. #SoCalledSongwriter
Oh shut up! Beyonce is a song writer and probably makes more from her non singles than ShortlivedcareerShanti makes from her singles.

The ladies need to get it together and tour again. Let’s be honest, it’s not as though any of them have much going on, so would it kill them to put their differences aside, work on a new album and go on tour. SWV are making bank even today from their live shows so EV should be able to as well.
That is so unfair!
These girls are the original Beyonce. Frank taught Beyonce everything he taught them.
This is who Beyonce modelled herself on.
I may have been 2/3 when they made their debut, but a simple search on YouTube can have your ears in Heaven! Besides Labelle, En Vogue has the best female group vocals ever. I wish they would tour with all four original members.
Ricky, Michael and Ronny are touring with New Edition, whereas the ladies of En Vogue don’t care enough to settle their differences and get their act together. In the end, the right group got the privilege of a feature appearance.
