‘Anaconda’: Nicki Minaj Cracks ‘Billboard’ With New Single…Before Its Release

Published: Friday 1st Aug 2014 by David

‘Myx‘ vixen Nicki Minaj may have failed to make the most new single ‘Pills N Potions’ on a promo front, but it would seem its follow-up will have no problem securing the rapper’s undivided attention this month.

Reportedly sassy, sexy and infectiously catchy, ‘Anaconda’ is also said to sample the Sir Mix a Lot classic ‘Baby Got Back’, packing a coquettish humour that may be akin to Princess Superstar‘s raunchy bop ‘Bad Babysitter.

Now, even before its release, the forthcoming single has impacted Billboard, storming one of its charts thanks to its controversial artwork.

Billboard Biz explains:

The cover — a rear-view photo of Minaj in a barely-there bikini — drew criticism for the amount of flesh shown. Minaj responded by sharing images through her Instagram account of models Kate Upton, Nina Agdal, Lily Aldridge and Chrissy Teigen in teensy swimsuits with the caption “Adequate.”

Those posts, which each earned around 100,000 likes apiece, contributed to Minaj’s 640 percent spike in weekly Instagram likes (week ending July 27, according to Next Big Sound). She adds more than 248,000 new fans on the platform and also received a 50 percent increase in mentions and retweets on Twitter. “Anaconda” is the second single from her upcoming album, The Pink Print.

Should the shapely rapper release the song and its supporting visual all at once, there’s no doubt that the cut will reach commendable ground on the ‘Hot 100‘, with the world set to rush to ‘VEVO’ to see if said video is just as “shocking” as its cover.

Of course, as an act whose never had any trouble moving singles and albums, there’s no doubt its sales will help to it enjoy a decent run on the tally.

However, the fact remains that Minaj has never sold enough singles in a single week to top the ‘Hot 100‘ spot, and so – if it’s a #1 she’s after- the rapper will have to put her attention grabbing skills to the test and work the single until it can be worked no more.

With this in mind, we’re hoping a sizeable budget has been put aside to keep the song spinning on ‘Top 40’ well after its video is released, as to build as much hype as possible for the hotly anticipated ‘Pink Print.’
