Iggy Azalea: “I Sparked A Change In Hip-Hop”

Pop princess Iggy Azalea believes she sparked a change in Hip-Hop music last year, revealing that she believes her debut album broke major ground in the genre in a new interview with ‘GQ’ magazine.

Why Azalea feels she has a place in the competitive arena?

Her estimation below…

She explained:

At the very worst, if I have a short-lived career, at least I could say I sparked a change—that I inspired some leniency in what people accept in hip-hop. And if I have a very long career and can be gyrating in a leotard at 35, that would be great.

Her bold statement comes after she enjoyed a fruitful awards season, picking up an MTV Video Music Award, two American Music Awards, a People’s Choice Award for music pulled from her debut album ‘The New Classic.’

Unfortunately, these awards meant nothing to critics of the Pop superstar, accused of shooting a sex tape to get ahead in the industry and failing to deliver material worthy of her enviable hype.

However, the entertainer is unbothered by the criticism, sharing:

Awards season helps. Anytime where people get to choose who they want to have a voice and they choose me, I just think that makes it worth it. And that gives me the patience to just bite my tongue. When people choose me as the person they think should be speaking for them, I think, ‘Well, I don’t really care what someone in the industry or another artist has to say about it. Your opinion is biased anyway, because you want people to listen to your voice. So having actual people who choose me, it makes me think, I have a place, and I don’t care what other people have to say about it.’ I was a fan of rap music growing up, and I didn’t feel like there were enough characters that represented me and my situation. So I think it’s needed.

Your thoughts?

Hip hop is already moving in a bad direction as a whole… These rappers that can’t even spit as a lyricist are becoming popular.. !
I think Iggy is okay for admiring the culture I just don’t think she is a good lyricist compared to Nicki

    • I STAN(D) FOR TALENT January 23, 2015

Kii! But, how is she lying??

  12. SMH January 23, 2015

Hmmm, was that ‘gyrating in a leotard’ crack a read directed at beyonce?

  13. tits mcgee January 23, 2015

When has she bitten her tongue?? She’s always crying in Twitter about something, someone says.

For someone so unbothered, she seems awfully, pressed…

  14. Realest January 23, 2015

I hate how people act likely pulse rap/ hip hop has been this authentic, pure, raw entity the past ten years. HipHop has literally been its worst state for a while now.

Iggy didn’t lie. I mean I’m not saying she sparked this TREMENDOUS REVOLUTION but c’mon there has never been a white female rapper, let alone from another country, to pop off. And please don’t gimme that Fergie/Gwen bull crap because Fergie is a SANGER (yes bish sang) and Gwen is a rocker glam chick!

And you can tell that this David person is just another bitter black hater, so sèx tape speculation is what got her ahead in the game? So her grind meant nothing right. Oh ok. Keep doing you Iggy boo, if they ain’t hatin THEN there’s the issue!

    • Regina George January 23, 2015

CHURCH!!! Where were these critics when soulja boy was killin the last lil bit of artistry in hip hop? Make yo coinz Iggy… I definitely won’t hate on a hustle or grind… Truth be told, I don’t consider myself an Iggy “fan” but I’m all for someone working hard, keeping their tough skin when blows are thrown at them constantly, and coming out stronger… IF she does have longevity, these people are only adding to her movie she’ll be getting later on…

As much as I like Nicki, that brush off she gave Iggy backstage rubbed me the wrong way. The damn girl did nothin to deserve that attitude and never took any accolades from Nicki which made me realize how BOTHERED Nicki is by the presence of another female in the game… Nicki kills it so she should have just taken that In positivity, but instead, she was a straight up BI.SH about it.

  15. Umm January 23, 2015

Ummmmmmm No Iggy the last chick to change the rap game was Nicki Minaj. She brought in the blonde and colorful wigs, Barbie swag, nipple pasties, s*** feminine image, raps about s**, colorful crazy costumes and was the first female to do rap/pop fusion……… Wait, that was Lil Kim….. Never mind kiiiiiiiiiii death ok ok I’ve been proven wrong

    • tits mcgee January 23, 2015

      LOL! You got jokes! 🙂

    • DeCarlo’Fung January 23, 2015

LMAOOO I was waiting for you to throw Lil Kim’s name in there! HAAAA!! Good one!!

  16. sleazy January 23, 2015

1 hit and this woman think she is madonna bye

    • Correctionville January 23, 2015

Fancy, black widow and problem. 1+1+1=1?

    • KingOfTheCastle January 23, 2015

She never said she was Madonna but she has had a big impact on rap music. I don’t classify her in the same way I’d classify Nicki, Foxy, Kim, Eve or Missy, they’re proper hip-hop/rap artists, whereas to me, Iggy is a Pop/Rap artist.

People need to stop comparing Iggy to Nicki, they are two totally different types of artist and are in their own individual lane.

I remember when Eminem first came out, people were very disrespectful to him and now he’s earnt their respect and it’s down to Iggy to prove herself and show people what she’s truly capable of in time.

      • Truth January 23, 2015

Um Nicki is pop rap too. Let’s not forget star ships and pink friday.

  17. #JACKIE (Cici da baddest) January 23, 2015

Half the people mad at her don’t even listen to hip hop lmao they are pop stans

    • Correctionville January 23, 2015

      Tell it

  18. Kitty Puurrzz January 23, 2015

People don’t like giving this girl her props I see. The definition of CHANGE- providing something different. Wether you like her or not, she’s something DIFFERENT in Hip hop. A successful white female rapper from another country was unheard of until Iggy & yall know it. Deal with it.

  19. BELLA MARLENE FAVELA January 23, 2015

    she’s feeling herself back off!!!!
what did she change? pop/rap? Nicki already paid a prize for it cause I’ve never seen them call Iggy a sell-out ..
2; white Aussie woman that broke barriers, girl if any other white aussie whack female rapper comes up, she would be dragged too!! so she is not suffering for anyone!!!
3; I saw her tweet retweeted in my tl when I don’t follow her and she was dragging Ebro for a ordinary joke!! and u can tell she want people to love her thou..
    4) not being a hater but honestly when last did any body throw shade at her? she was almost forgotten then she came to Twitter and started insulting journalists.
    5) u guys always criticized Nicki of stating her stats on instagram but didn’t Iggy do it? always remembering us she has a #1 song and I’m defending Nicki there cause she always shows appreciation see; her shoutout to Taylor swift for making super bass hit!!
    6) nobody wanna answer me!! why was she nominated in a pop category when she is rap as the lead?

    • Correctionville January 23, 2015

Why are you bringing up Nicki? Just like Nicki, you are pressed over Iggy. Iggy has gotten 10 times more hate than Nicki as she should. Nicki is the better rapper but chooses to make that watered down crap music she’s made when she could be making quality s***.

  20. BELLA MARLENE FAVELA January 23, 2015

successful? lmaooo I can’t with the dilusion the only thing she changed in hip hop is she is the first and only female rapper with label deal to have a hit and flop on there debut even Nicki never had a hit like fancy!!! she only had a top10 hit with bottoms up!! u guys would say anything when she cant be proud to say she has sold 500k in USA or even 1M in the world!!

  21. Cake like Lady GaGa January 23, 2015

I don’t think she changed anything, but she is a breathe of fresh air. She deserves all the success and I wish her even more success. Those grammys belong to her, good luck Iggy

  22. Blacc January 23, 2015

The thing is…. EVERYONE is talking about her RIGHT NOW.. she’s more famous than any negative comment and making more money than all these people who sit behind computers typing angry and mad.. its so sad to read half of these comments.. but everyone has an opinion.. I just don’t see where all the energy comes from to be so negative when she riding around in nice cars touring the world for people who want to hear this horrible music she puts out… non the less just like all the artist that everyone talk about Flop or top of the pop charts… they are all paid… smh

  23. DanYiel Teflon January 23, 2015

No Matter what Iggy Azaela is here & her music sells~> her haters make HER BETTER!!:)

  24. BELLA MARLENE FAVELA January 23, 2015

the b**** is still crying on twitter and comparing her self to rihanna thou!! and u guys think she is not bordered? lmaoo it pains her to the core that she don’t get love, she wanna be Taylor swift so bad!!! she is running when no one is chasing her the dillusion!!!
And as I said I don’t hate/like Iggy cause overall I don’t know what I feel for her and if she feels so, she deserves all her success but damn
    …in Beyonce flawless voice *godamn*

  25. James January 23, 2015

It’s actually horrifying how racist the website is and how racist many of the commenters are. I understand her statements are “bold”; however, it doesn’t justify how viciously this website and its community have gone after her for being a white woman in rap. You support Banks who is absolutely, certifiably bipolar and honestly needs to get help; and you sit here and promote inequality by bashing someone of a different color constantly.

I don’t understand how people can sit behind a screen and act racially charged and privileged, when they’re putting down something and creating what they’re essentially against. Iggy isn’t negatively affecting rap or hip-hop; she doesn’t have negative comments about it, she doesn’t put people who are black or brown or whatever color down, yet, this website insists on being racially motivated and hateful.

    • Publicity January 29, 2015

no we support Banks because she’s actually talented and authentic, but igloo has supporters who support her simply because she’s a white female rapper, so she gets praised and placed on a pedestal that she doesn’t deserve. So black female rappers has to work twice as hard, and be twice as good as igloo to get half the recognition and praise now were is the racism?

  26. Danny Bey January 23, 2015

Did she subliminally shade Beyoncé??!!?!??? *puts call out to Beygency*

  27. BELLA MARLENE FAVELA January 23, 2015

its a related issue, b**** Nicki can’t be pressed over a condensed white girl who can’t be proud of selling one million albums in her career in 10M!! u never knew anything, Nicki was hated but the difference is that she proved herself with a couple of verses, her album sales!!! when Nicki was coming up other old femcees were saying I quote “all looks no talent” until they started apologising. only three female rappers supported Nicki foxy, Jackie O, Amil!! all either loath or side eye her!!! didn’t Iggy criticized Nicki on two occasions? bet performance, PF:RR? now she’s angry for d criticism! even till date they criticized Nicki for pop right? lmao on your last phrase b**** Nicki>> Iggy and for the crap music part tell that to jayz that love looking ass, chiraq, beez in d trap or kanye that said she’s a problem!! or her collaborators like Beyonce. or Eminem, ludacris, Remy ma that use her beat and flow!! or overall her worst album RR was more acclaimed than TNC, Refalldownchartsified ..or TPP acclaim> bye

  28. gio88 January 23, 2015

let’s explain this…here what SHE actually said about that statement:

@HipHopWired: Tweet your face when Iggy Azalea said she “sparked a change” in Hip-Hop.

@IGGYAZALEA: @oldmanebro @HipHopWired I’m talking about changing who we accept having a voice in hip hop. As the only white, Australian, woman with a 1#
@IGGYAZALEA: @oldmanebro @HipHopWired you can meme all you want but I have change many ppls opinions about allowing different voices to be heard.
@IGGYAZALEA: @oldmanebro @HipHopWired u guys are the BIGGEST haters you try to exaggerate everything I say to make it seem like I have a god-like complex
@IGGYAZALEA: @oldmanebro @HipHopWired you never thought the day would come id exist and I’m here. Many love it. DEAL WITH IT LADIES.

  29. BELLA MARLENE FAVELA January 23, 2015

before I move I wanna ask Iggy to concentrate on the love from her fans that goes a long way to help her!™ she should care less about what a hater gotta say about her cause at the end they are not buying the songs!!! I’ve always had problems with celebrities complaining about the hate they get…with that if the hate don’t kill her it’ll make her successful!!! peace out

  30. Paulo January 23, 2015

the headline led you to believe she’s bigging herself up but the actual quote is nothing to write about. can we at least wait for the Grammys racial bias to happen before we start putting this girl down for things she’s not in control of again?

  31. Mark111 January 23, 2015

People please ignore this Uggly. I haven’t heard a thing about her in the past two weeks nor her music. She’s done, so now she’s trying to play the poor me card again. Fancy is not crossing to 2015, after the grammys, she’s done until she drops a 2nd album, and seeing how badly her EP was, it’s not going to be big.

    • Correctionville January 23, 2015

Haven’t heard really anything from anyone in the past couple weeks tbh. The Grammys are in a few weeks so I don’t see why she’s playing woe is me. Maybe you need to read the full article instead of basing that off of a bias cutout of the article

  32. Keri Qween January 23, 2015

“Gyrating in a leotard at 35..”

    Hahaha the shade

*Side eye* the delusion is strong in this one…

  35. Who? January 23, 2015

I always knew she was retarded, and she proved that with this interview.

  36. Misundersrtood January 26, 2015

Iggy made history. She didn’t change hip hop. She is barely in the hip hop category. She uses the term hip hop so lightly which shows she doesn’t fully see its value. Hip hop is more than music. Eminem changed hip hop because we saw a white man who actually had talent and could relate to the black struggle. He showed that through his music which hip hop was designed to do. Iggy has YET to show through her music her relevancy in anybody lives. I am still awaiting the day for a white female rapper to actually change the game. And when she comes I have no doubt that she will be welcomed into the hip hop community. Its not just because she
