He may have presented the project as a mixtape, but this week has seen the confirmation of news that Drake‘s ‘If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late’ isn’t a mixtape at all…it’s an album.
Full story below…
The rapper had claimed the surprise release was a mixtape that would lead the way for his hotly anticipated project ‘Views From the 6.’
However, as his Young Money mentor Lil Wayne seeks to pull him away from the Cash Money empire, it’s now emerged that the mixtape became an album when Cash Money execs opted to turn into an album after they learned Drake intended to release it for free on the mixtape platform ‘DatPiff.’
This move will see Drake part ways with Cash far sooner than expected as the album counts towards his contractual LP obligation.
DatPiff’s Kyle Reilly revealed:
Originally we were in talks to release it for free…and have DJ Drama host and even make it an official Gangsta Grillz…however the label was not in favor of that and they struck an agreement to release the project the retail route and it would count towards one of his albums. It was a mutual decision since he wanted to give it away. Cash Money said, ‘Hell no,’ not in those words, so they ‘agreed’ to do it this way as a middle ground and it would count towards his Cash Money deal album total. The label had zero input or creative control over IYRTITL.
Now set to earn from the project, Cash Money’s last minute move came as reports suggest the rapper is one album away from cutting ties with them for good.
