Another year, another Grammy ceremony.
In homage to tonight’s show, our From The Vault pick is a rousing showing by Mariah Carey at the 2006 award ceremony.
We’re pretty sure you’re now well acquainted with the stats of the blockbuster era Ms. Carey scored with her ‘Emancipation Of Mimi’ comeback LP. For the forgetful few, the the project sold over 10 million albums, enjoyed countless weeks at #1, spurned two top charting singles including Billboard’s “Song Of The Decade” ‘We Belong Together’.
Taking to the Grammy stage after bagging 8 nominations, Ms. Carey delivered an epic medley of the aforementioned Jermaine Dupri-moulded smash alongside the Gospel fan-favorite ‘Fly Like A Bird’ – which was produced by James ‘Big Jim’ Wright. With her vocals in great form – and just a tad of backing track for good measure – this ranks as one of Mimi’s best performance of recent years, not only for her voice but also her commanding stage presence.
One would think that all these credentials would equal major recognition by the Grammy committee, right? Wrong! Though taking home three gramophones on that night, the diva missed out on the oh-so-prestigious “Record Of The Year”, “Song Of The Year” and “Album Of The Year” distinctions, with the organization instead opting to reward arguably less celebrated music – both critically and commercially – by U2 and Green Day.
Unfortunately, nobody’s ever safe from a Grammy snub, especially not on the Urban side of things. From where we’re standing, Mariah deserved to win every single award she was nominated for on that evening.
With the Urban arena at its most popular in years, it’ll be interesting to see WHO the Grammy committee considers the leaders of the pack.
THE QUEEN!! This performance was flawless and she snatched everyone that night! Me..I Am Mariah deserved Grammy nominations this year but the Grammys stay snubbing her smhhh
This performance just Took me to church. ; thank you ms. Benny medina for pulling MIMI together; FLY LIKE A BIRD hurts so good; SING MIMI ….don’t worry about the haters
A NON-SHADY MARIAH CAREY POST?
WHAT WEBSITE IS THIS?
WHAT DID YA’LL DO TO SAM?
Honestly Sam just calls it like he sees it when it comes to Mariah. He praises her when it’s due (ex. the elusive Chanteuse, her good performances on tour), but also calls her out on her shittiness, which happens to have been a lot lately.
No he doesn’t. I didn’t see one post about those six nights at the Beacon Theater vocals consistency, but I did see a post with the headline reading “Damage Control?” when she did a warm up backstage.
No Sam is a hating queen when it come to Mariah, he NEVER posts any of the good stuff like how fifth harmony song “like Mariah” is doing so well…na Sam is a little Beyotch
I watched this live. I remember not seeing her win on live television. I wanted her to win them all. I was surprised to find out 2 years later that she did win and it was not televised. That era was when I found out who Mariah Carey was at my young age of 12. Grammy’s came on one week before my Bday, so actually I was 11. I never felt for a woman like that before. #L4L
* I was 12 about to be 13.
i was 11 too. lmao.
and this is when i started paying attention to mariah.
Wow that’s cool and interesting. She needs the effect on youth now. Everyone says she isn’t popular anymore because of one incertitude album. They were saying that in early century with glitter and charmbracelet. Those albums sold, three million and five million worldwide. Mariah so called flops are what beyonce just sold. No shade on beyonce but we all should understand that mariahs flops were sussessful. If we lowered the biased opinions from three albums to one, we wouldn’t have this biased opinion of our girl on daily basis. #LFORL
This was a pretty solid performance from her. It’s amazing how time flies, cuz it does not feel like this was nine years ago!
I do miss “The Voice”, as exemplified in this era. In terms of her voice, I feel like it wasn’t until after she had her kids that her live performances really started going downhill in terms of her voice. I know a woman’s body changes drastically after giving birth, and breathing techniques for singers who are mothers probably change as well.
I really thought The Elusive Chanteuse would be Carey’s 2nd EMC. Think that’s what Jermaine Dupree wanted with this album but it’s too bad it didn’t quite take off as expected. On the bright side, we got to see MiMi go on tour. Hoping her next album will slay!
I actually watched this PERFORMACE & she SLAYED!! Oh how the times have Past Us!!
Sketchy vocals….
Taylor always has sketch vocals
BEST POP DUO WINNER: CHRISTINA WON THAT GRAMMY! CHRISTINA WON THAT GRANMY! CHRISTINA WON THAT GRAMMY!
Actually this performance wasn’t her best FOR ME PERSONALLY, I have seen her do better. I felt it was pitchy and breathy. I personally felt like E=MC2 should have been the work on Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel. Cause E=MC2 was weak. I love Mariah I do been belting her in the shower since I was a toddler. I know what she can do and I need her to stop being complacent.
My Queen! 🙂 I feel so old watching this. Love this performance for her stage presence more than I do for her vocals. She demanded the hell out of that stage. I miss this era. It is such an important part of her career.
This performance was great and it was definitely a highlight that year at the Grammys if not the performance of the night.
SLAY RIAH!!!!
Great performance and she seem more confident with herself.
Grammys robbed her big time.
Epic performance
But even I can admit that there are so many great albums out there that it´s normal the most maintream ones lose against other amazing musicians. It´s true that grammys are too hard on Mariah cause she should have more at least in the lesser categories (Like Beyonce has those many who knows why!). But when it comes to the big 3, I understand how other musicians can block people like Mariah, and I´m not mad at it.
This how you sing a gospel record at the grammys!
