Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.
So, just as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’ allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.
On this #TBT we press play on splash hit ‘Genie In A Bottle,’ the official debut single from pop powerhouse Christina Aguilera. Dominating radio and video countdowns alike, the teen pop tune – the inaugural offering popped from her self-titled debut album – shot to #1 on the Hot 100 and was the first of three chart-toppers from the project.
Dethroning then chart-champion Will Smith‘s ‘Wild Wild West’ and fending off competition from the likes of Enrique Iglesias, Destiny’s Child, and more, ‘Genie’ granted Aguilera an impressive 5 week run in summer 1999 and marked the third time that year a female debuted at #1 with her first single (see: Britney Spears’ ‘Baby…One More Time’ and Jennifer Lopez‘s ‘If You Had My Love’).
It was simply a good year for pop! Check below to see what other familiar faces you see in the top 20 this week in 1999:

Your thoughts?
This is a huge f*ck you to those who call Xtina a flop! Don’t forget at one point, Xtina was the bish to beat!
That was THEN.
Show muah where Chinchilla Agoura HAS BEEN on da Billboard in da last 10 years…
NO @ ‘chinchilla’. I’m done with you ????????
“say something, moves like jagger, feel this moment”…. Oh ok.
Such a great time. I miss it!
I am coming back for the charts… waitn for my slayage
Oh what a time to be alive ????
‘It’s not right but it’s okay’ was the tune me and my sis used to sing all the time ????. Can’t forget 702’s ‘Where My Girls At’ which was a slept on tune, and was originally offered to TLC (who also got offered Britneys ‘Baby One More Time’). TLC then came round with ‘No Scrubs’ and ‘Fanmail’ which was had one of the most iconic looks and periods of the millennium.
If u asked muah generation who r those ppl from that 99 chart rite now, 90% of them wouldn’t know who they r…
TBH!!!!
Can anyone find an actual receipt of Farrah Franklin being an extra in the ‘Bills, Bills, Bills’ video. I can’t with this bish lying about it for 16 years, I’m bout to drag her on Twitter ????
Um LaTavia is doing her hair in the video (ironic)… Farrah is the girl with braids…
There’s your receipt… No watch the video again!
Cute seeing Xtina top a chart without clinging to another artist. Yaaas @ Beyonce and the girls slaying charts in 90s.
JLo debut album was everything loved her before she released it #SHOULDVENEVER id classic
she is everythin , jlo still a brand more than the others
Female artists ruled the Hot 100 in 1999. Brandy, Britney, Monica, Cher, TLC, DC, Jlo, Christina, Mariah all had #1’s. But it was Whitney Houston who was the most consistent that year remaining in the top 10 more than half of the year despite not having a #1 single. I miss the 90’s.
All the songs in that 1999 top 20 were dope!
But to be fair, I do enjoy this current era as well. During the last couple of years, black male artists could barely crack into the top 20, but this year Omi, The Weekd and Fetty are doing big so i’m all for it.
GENIE IN A BOTTLE – great song! And video super.
I’m sorry, but music was just as bad then as it is now. All Star? All those boy bands and t*** pop girls. You were either too young or have horrible memory.
The difference was those acts could deliver live, a actually sing and contribute to their music. Half the songs on the 1999 chart are classics. You’re buggin, girl.
Music was so much better back then and all the artists on here, albeit a few, had actual talent that stretched beyond studio and cameras- real talent. Music is wack today
