This time we press play on Mary J. Blige‘s party-starter ‘Family Affair,’ which shot to the top of the charts this week in 2001. Coming as the R&B royal’s first reign atop the chart nearly 10 years after she burst on the scene with her debut album ‘What’s the 411?,’ the Dr.Dre produced cut ousted Jennifer Lopez‘s ‘I’m Real’ right off the Hot 100 throne.
Enjoying a six week run at #1, the tune came as MJB’s first and last chart-topper on the tally. But, with a catalogue as impressive as hers, we’re sure she’s not too mad about it. DC Survivor, Usher 8701, Aaliyah self-titled, Alicia Keys amazing Songs In A Minor, Mariah Carey TRL meltdown and Glitter flopping, Virgin PAYING her to get off the label. MJ last album and that amazing 4th Anna special.

2001 was by far my FAVORITE year for music, especially the summer of ’01. I honestly believe that was the year R&B dominated the charts and had somewhat of a ‘commercial renaissance.’

I was pretty big on Aaliyah around that time too! I thought she was soooo beautiful and s*** (in an understated way).
It seems that NO one remembers early free spirit Nelly F. Lights was my favorite for a lil bit. I think she won Best New Artist that year as well. Michelle Branch had good songs back then as well and I don’t know what happend to her. That year a lot of fresh new talent were popping, like Averl, Branch, Keys and I’m sure Norah Jones came out that year as well. I’m sure of it.

I hated this year n music. I only liked 5 or 6 songs. I feel music didn’t become back good until mid 03 and stayed until around 06/early 07. Ever since it’s been an up and down spiral with over saturated microwavable artists.
