Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.

So, just as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’ allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.

This week we’ve checked the charts of 2006 to see Beyonce reigning with her Slim Thug-assisted hit ‘Check On It.’  Lifted from the greatest hits effort of Destiny’s Child, the song’s accompanying music video served as quite the festive musical advert for the year’s Steve Martin-led film ‘Pink Panther’ (which Knowles also starred).

Skyrocketing to #1 on the Hot 100 shortly after its release, the Swizz Beatz-produced bop gave Bey her 3rd chart-topper as a solo artist and enjoyed an impressive 5 week reign atop the Hot 100 before it was dethroned this week in 2006.  Tuck in below to see who did the honors as well as check out where some of your other faves from the era landed:

    Interesting The majority are black…..

    • Tyler Makiavelli March 10, 2016

Ikr! Rnb was burning up the charts back then. Times have changed.

      • Abel Minaj (Arianator Barb) March 10, 2016

I blame BEP and Gaga for the death of R&B on the mainstream charts. 2007 was the last year urban was really dominating then all of a sudden electro pop/euro dance s*** was EVERYWHERE

      • Tyler Makiavelli March 10, 2016

Yup! Electronic/EDM took the world by storm

      • Navy Gravy March 10, 2016

You can also blame the artists who abandoned their fans to try and make pop hits instead of staying faithful to r&b. Usher, Ciara, Keyshia Cole even Christina Aguilera to an extent, Chris Brown, T-Pain, Ne-Yo and so many more. Once they tried to change the formula, they fell off at some point or another and all had a hard time making a comeback. Worked for some but not for most.

      • Iamdiego March 10, 2016

Blame the billboard rule changes over the years. And streaming.

    • BIGGES AALIYAHFAN March 10, 2016

That was the last great year of music being recognized or respect. Well 2007 really was, but this was when the music industry changed for the worst in my opinion. Smh.

  2. Annalise March 10, 2016

Ooooh boy you looking like you like what you see,
Won’t you come over and check up on it!! I might let you work up on it!!!!!
    ___
YASSSS that was the m’fvxkkng anthem!!!!

    • ???Chile, leave my weave at the door and don’t steal it like those broke ass barb stans??? March 10, 2016

“Ladies, let him check up on it. Watch him while he check up on it. Did it, pop it, twerk it, stop it. Check on me tonight!!!!” Yes, this was my jam!!! You just gotta love her uptempo grooves!!!!

      • Annalise March 10, 2016

Yas you betta sing that song hunni!

  3. YOUR MADGEsty March 10, 2016

“Check on It” was a cute-ass bop and still is!

This is why her B’Day era remains her most iconic to me. I loved everything about her then and even she is a beautiful woman, you can’t deny that she was at the Peak of her beauty between 2005-2008.

    B’Day >>> her other era’s.

    .

P.S: Mary J Blige’s “Be Without You” should have went to #1. That song is one of the most classic R&B songs from the new millenium so far.

    • Coolness March 10, 2016

I have a hard time deciding whether her true beauty peak was the Destiny Fulfilled or B’day era. She was STUNNING in the Cater 2 U video but then I look at Upgrade U or Beautiful Liar and I’m like hmmmmmm. I know Bey’s red carpet fashion has always been criticised but I loved how her clothes were so unabashedly, s*xy, sparkly and glamorous back then. Nowadays, she tries to be too quirky a la Solange but I’m not feeling it. Give me Thotyonce with the honey blond weave, baby oil on her thighs, figure-hugging gowns and mini dresses, haha!!!

    • Rihboy March 10, 2016

This is the era that Beyoncé had me sold!!!!

  4. Reba McEntire stan March 10, 2016

Heeeyyy!!! I LUHHH Ms New Booty!!! I lowkey miss the Crunk era

  5. Dossome March 10, 2016

That James Blunt song was played to death,I couldn’t stand it any longer…

    • Royalkev March 10, 2016

That song irks me to no end! That song, along with ‘I Gotta Feeling’ (BEP), ‘Party Rock Anthem’ (LMFAO), ‘Harlem Shake'(Baauer) and ‘Royals’ (Lorde) will make you cringe! … Hey Dos! 🙂

      • Dossome March 10, 2016

Heyy, long time Kev…I agree with you. infact I Gotta Feeling killed whatever tolerance I had left for BEP

  6. james March 10, 2016

What a trashy song . I prefer jlo s booty or nicki anaconda over this

  7. Dossome March 10, 2016

    Be Without You & Unpredictable>>>>>

  8. Black power March 10, 2016

This just goes to show how meaningless a number one record is… She doesn’t even perform this along with her classic jams it was just a cute bop back then

    • ??Queen Molly?? March 10, 2016

Was it even on an album?

  9. ??Queen Molly?? March 10, 2016

Cascada tho! She had bops…. Shocked seeing Keyshia on the charts

  10. Weezy Tha Goat March 10, 2016

Her longevity in this industry is amazing. And 2006 was a good year.

    • Tyler Makiavelli March 10, 2016

Almost 20 years in and still going strong!

  11. JOHNVIDAL March 10, 2016

Blah. Not too impressed by that top 10 from 2006. The 00s were already way worse than the 80s and 90s for mainstream music. So this type of comparison is not too efective. The real great posts for Retro Rewind are the ones remembering epic quality songs from before, when almost only great stuff could make it to the top.

    • OVO Gurl March 10, 2016

      oh shut the hell up.

      • JOHNVIDAL March 11, 2016

        OVO
I think taht comment was dedicated to you hun. You´re the only one who showed bad attitude, not me for giving a sane opinion. An opinion that is shared by most people. Everytime I leave a commnt like that one in these Retro Rewind posts every body agrees. Only difference this time is that in that average top 10 from 2006 you had Beyonce and one os her average songs at teh top, so Beyonce fans thumbed the comment down. Nothing else.

    • Tyler Makiavelli March 10, 2016

You have a bad attitude huh?
      How old are u?

      • OVO Gurl March 10, 2016

Yes Tyler he is so annoying! We get it Mimi and Whit are legends and no one could sing better than them back in the day, but those days are long gone so stfu.

  12. RihYonce March 10, 2016

10 years later ! The queen is still out her skating , her best era yet is coming . Still outlasting all of her peers most people on that list are gone now. It’s crazy how R&B was so popular back then & so mainstream hopefully we get back to that point again . I feel like it’s coming back

  13. Annalise March 10, 2016

KIIIII i CAN’T @ this hœ @ANÜSLiyah-Dana-Carter running to this post to dodge me YEt again. Post your email address and quit being a pvssy. You type that email address in every single time you comment on here so why can’t you post it? I’m waiting!!!!!!!! ?

  14. OVO Gurl March 10, 2016

I forgot all about this song. I loved it.

  15. Weezy Tha Goat March 10, 2016

This was also the last year people cared about Ciara.

  16. What Now March 10, 2016

YASSS @ that chart! This was such a great year in music! That damn James Blunt and Natasha Bedingfield songs were so overplayed though. Every where I went, it was someone reminding me that she was a promiscuous girl, someone telling me I was beautiful, and someone trying telling me to feel the wind on my skin… Still, I miss this era of music.

  17. Fatusankoh March 10, 2016

Omg I reamber that song queen Bey slay us than and now long live queen Bey

  18. Oscar March 10, 2016

love bey, but I really don’t care for that song

  19. ???Chile, leave my weave at the door and don’t steal it like those broke ass barb stans??? March 10, 2016

It’s a shame that “Check On It” is usually seen as her only forgettable #1 because this very song used to get me worked up and ready to shake it all down to the ground. I ONLY saw that Pink Panther movie because she was in it. That’s all! I wish she would perform this song more often. Maybe, somewhere right after “Get Me Bodied” or “Baby Boy” in the setlist would work best.

  20. MOLLY GOT DRAGGED BY HER COUSIN March 10, 2016

@Tyler I hope you dont speak to molly anymo because this rat b**** was talking s*** about how your skin color looks like one of those the walking dead zombies burnt up in a fire. Oh and dont trust JanetCiara too. Her and molly were laughing about that but now their not friend anymo because molly ruined #JACKIES credibility on here by making everyone seem it was Molly running that account but it was really janetciara. im Only tellin you this because I got in a argument with them about their comments about your skin.

    • smh March 10, 2016

Omg tyler is going to slaughter them now. *Grabs popcorn

    • #JACKIE March 10, 2016

Death! I haven’t posted in daaaaays and you b****** are still mentioning me. Nothing was ruined but your hairline when your mother put that janky perm in your head when you were 2 years old b****. I am NOT Molly or FC. Gtfoh with that b*******… Who are YOU?

      • MOLLY GOT DRAGGED BY HER COUSIN March 10, 2016

Janetciara b*tch dont let me expose u for what u are h**. You already told me everythang before b****

      • #JACKIE March 10, 2016

Kii you irrelevant b****. Idk nor do I care about the so-called conversations y’all had. Me and JC don’t even use each other like that. We are neutral. Once again, GTFOH and this is the last time I will address these Molly/JC allegations. Good day.

    • ??Queen Molly?? March 10, 2016

      Receipts or stfu

  21. Coolness March 10, 2016

I must say that the video was when she was at her most stunning. She slayed EVERY FRAME with the varying hair and make-up looks all being perfect 10’s. Both she as a solo artist and Destiny’s Child had WAY BETTER songs that should’ve reached the apex of the BB Hot 100 but peaked at #2 or #3. As for this throwback chart, I think 2005 was the true big year for R&B; Ciara and DC were extending eras of their albums that were released the previous year, Usher had just come off the mega-successful Confessions album, Amerie released one of the best R&B albums of that decade with Touch, a then-innocent Chris Brown, Keyshia Cole and John Legend made splashy debuts, Mariah made a huge comeback with TEOM (which produced the longest staying chart topper of the 2000’s) and many more. Good times…

    • Tyler Makiavelli March 10, 2016

Damn I miss those days. The again, I was only in the 5th grade…
Maybe that’s why they seemed so fresh and simple LMAO

  22. ??Queen Molly?? March 10, 2016

@MGDBHC How can you blatantly make up a lie like that? JC would be the first one to clock when ever I said some outlandish shitt.

    • MOLLY GOT DRAGGED BY HER COUSIN March 10, 2016

STFU you dumb b*tch. always telling lies!

      • ??Queen Molly?? March 10, 2016

Then where tf is the receipt?

    • MOLLY GOT DRAGGED BY HER COUSIN March 10, 2016

you and that dumb ho janetciara deleted the tweets before I got an argument with jc. B*TCH!

  23. Lake Erie March 10, 2016

Flo Rida? But as for the throwback, I can really say I liked and listened to every song all the time on that list. Cant say the same about today’s music.

  24. FC/JC March 10, 2016

OMG I lived for this chart era

  25. LDN Chick March 10, 2016

Beyonce has many more songs that are way more iconic in her discography that didn’t even top the charts.

    • Tyler Makiavelli March 10, 2016

Run the World is one of em

      • Danny Bey March 10, 2016

Love On Top, Halo, Freakum Dress, Dangerously In Love all didn’t top the charts but are iconic in their own right.

  26. DOnt M3$$ March 10, 2016

I loooooove this song but I am 85% sure those are Kelly Rowland’s vocals on the second verse. Also Swizz says at the beginning “DC” … just interesting is all.

    • Tyler Makiavelli March 10, 2016

      Umm,that is Swizz Beat’s voice…
He produced the track and no those aren’t Kelly’s vocals on the 2ND verse.

      • Danny Bey March 10, 2016

        Yes they are.

      • DOnt M3$$ March 11, 2016

Concerned you don’t know how to read.. I literally said “Swizz says” so yes I am obviously aware that is his voice and that he produced the track. I was insinuating it was originally a Destiny’s Child track that Bey muscled the other girls off of (with some of Kelly’s vocals still left on for some reason, check wiki she is a credited vocalist on the track), considering Swizz says “Desitny’s Child” in the intro and it was included on their “#1’s” album.
        🙂

  27. Royalkev March 10, 2016

‘Check On It’ is actually one of my least favorite Beyonce songs (I actually liked it more during the time it was out as a single) and it’s still better than 80% of music found on the charts these days! The last 5+ years overall haven’t been so great musically. Everything is so generic and there’s such a lack of real talent! Anyone pretentious or controversial can make a hit (or “comeback”) nowadays and music politics are at an all time high! Few artists actually believe in having artistic direction, musical integrity (when it comes to music being judged on it’s own merit) and not using gimmicks to break stupid records that surface every other day. That said, thank God for Bey and the small handful of gifted artists that has made this decade worth while!

  28. ~The Arcade~ March 10, 2016

Wow! Haven’t heard this in a minute.

  29. Danny Bey March 10, 2016

Tidbit: I bet y’all didn’t know that Kelly sings the first half of the second verse in Check On It.

    ?

  30. King Mark111 /.\ March 10, 2016

    #8YearsAgo

    • Tyler Makiavelli March 10, 2016

      Since Rhianna went multiplatinum?
      Yeah, we know.

  31. .:: Centurion (14 #1s) ::. March 10, 2016

One of her worst songs ever. According to the no-life-having-āss-høe-hive, all Beybøla’s laughable 5 #1’s are iconic, but who remotely remembers this song? LMAO!

  32. .:: Centurion (14 #1s) ::. March 10, 2016

Her number one records are meaningless and forgettable. Someone like Mariah has great pride and joy over her 18 Billboard Hot 100 #1s, but of course when your fave has a laughable 5 #1s, people will be doing the most and trying very hard to undermine and degrade the historic Billboard Hot 100. ?

    • DOnt M3$$ March 11, 2016

      You’re very sad

  33. IT time to turn unpullow around Cole brezyk March 11, 2016

People say music was the best back in 90’s to 2002 and Beyonce knowles carter could of done a remix to that song check on it

  34. StrawberryMuffin24 March 11, 2016

    Beyonce is OVERRATED GARBAGE!
It’s so many other great female artists! That bish don’t do nothing but lip-synch to pre recorded tracks and P. Pop so tired of her fake tired ass routine!
