Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.
So, as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’ allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.
This week it’s all about Grammy winning R&B diva Mya. The singer/songwriter saw her Sisqo-penned debut single, ‘It’s All About Me,’ make quite the splash on the Hot 100’s top 10 in mid-May 1998. Jumping to the #6 spot, the tune would continue enjoying its peak run there this week that year. The mid-tempo groove served as ample introduction to the triple threat songstress, whose seductive coo and fancy footwork would see her dance up the charts a number of times in the late 90s and early 2000s alongside the eras leading R&B teen sensations Brandy, Monica, and Aaliyah.
While the musical landscape has shifted from the Urban-dominated charts of the late nineties and early noughties, we still reminisce on the time where it was nothing to hear ‘All About Me’ bumping from radio speakers. Oh, the good old days (sigh).
Look below to find out who accompanied Mya on this week’s Hot 100 from 1998…

Back when music was good…. Sigh
It was so good back then! When you could actually listen to the radio all day!! That era is missed!!
Wait justin timberlake has a #1 single? Right now ? tf
Love her. Love the Smoove Jones EP. She’s so underrated. Her talent exceed a lot of today’s artist.
I’m saying right? Been a long time fan. I have a personalized CD/Calendar.
At her peak she could do no wrong.
She sings live and sounds good, dances damn well and she has honed her craft as writer, producer etc etc. She has it all.
Just that with Mya’s personality she is almost too sweet for this business.
She seems quite OK with being low key and sadly I want otherwise for her.
Been hearing her say in interviews that “Smoove Jones” is the last of the series and now she is prepping something else with the right partnership…so I hope this means major label etc…now that she has her own Planet 9 imprint she can certainly own more but need proper distribution and budget.
Janet,Mariah,Celine,Shania & Madonna in the top 25?Good ol days
This song was a banger! Written by the incredible Sisqo.
I honestly own every song in the top 25 on that 1998 chart. These songs were dope. Mariah would enjoy one more week on top before Brandy & Monica leaped 23-1 in their second week on the chart with The Boy Is Mine for 13 weeks
Variety and (for the most part) quality.
Now… just trash.
ut yet you keep coming back and checking. Go back to the 90s then. C***! lol
I actually LOVE that Madonna song. The whole look and vibe from Frozen was iconic and definitely influenced an entire decade of rock & grunge artists (especially Amy Lee from Evanescence, Lacuna Coil, etc).

The whole chart is full of legendary bops, from ICONIC bops like Mariah Carey’s ‘My All’ & Celine’s ‘Heart Will Go On’, to the R&B slow jams like Xscapes ‘TAOTWTLY’, Janet’s ‘I Get Lonely’ & Destiny’s Child ‘No No No’. All of these songs are in my Apple Music (except for Will Smiths Getting jiggy with it.. cuz gurl, I can’t even!). What a time to be alive!
Mya’s It’s All About Me was such a perfectly R&B crossover song; soulfully/seductively sung verses over smooth production with an undeniably catchy chorus that you JUST CAN’T get out of your head. This was the time that the likes of R&B t*** idols such as Tevin Campbell, Aaliyah, Monica, Usher, Mya, Beyonce (as part of DC), Sisqo (as part of Dru Hill) and Tyrese displayed a certain maturity well beyond their years in the way they sang some pretty grown-up lyrics. They pulled it off so well that people much older than them could actually rock with their music. I can’t imagine a teenage singer TODAY talkin’ ’bout ‘Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number’, lmao!
JT is number #1?????? Wow!!!!!!?????????????
I still jam to this song! Ah the 90’s!
—
Damn every song on that list was fire. Back when radio was truly diverse and you heard everyone and it was good!
—
This crap now is horrible.
My All is a masterpiece. Oooh, it just melts my soul.

Congrats JT! His first #1 in 9 years. #TheresHopeForBeyonka
Brandy & Monica were running R&B. Aaliyah was there but behind them both.
No lies told.
1998 Was everything! I wish i had a time machine
Yeah man! That was a great time in music! I miss that 90’s so much!! Will we ever get back to an era like that?!
Brandy-1994
Aaliyah-1994
Monica-1995
Mya-1998
Music was the jam beat back in the 90’s
Consider Mya one of the last gems of the R&B girls in the 90’s.
Just wish she’d be back in a major way. She is a triple threat.
