Retro Rewind: Billboard Hot 100 This Week In 1996 #FBF

2Pac - How Do U Want It - (Front)-thatgrapejuice

Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.

So, just as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’ allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.
Now, just a day after what would’ve been the 45th birthday of rap legend Tupac Shakur, we revisit his first and only #1 hit – double A side single ‘How Do U Want It/California Love’ (found on his critically and commercially acclaimed album ‘All Eyez On Me.’)  Ousting fellow rap stars Bone Thugs-N-Harmony‘s hit ‘Crossroads’ from the top spot this month in 1996, 2pac saw his Quincy Jones-sampled jam bolt to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 with the assistance of KC & JoJo (of 90’s R&B group Jodeci) and a raunchy music video equipped adult entertainment stars, stripper poles, and more.
Going on to garner a Grammy nod at the 1997 ceremony, ‘Want’ continues to be one of Pac’s most enduring numbers from his short, yet storied career.  Now, as we anxiously await his long-awaited biopic (some 20 years after his death), we push play on ‘Want It’ and get our jam on this flashback Friday.  Join us below:

PAC has classics for days. His impact in hip hop is undeniable. I often find myself watching his interviews he was so intelligent

    • Biting Truth June 17, 2016

He should have told your mother to abort you.

  3. Keri Qween June 17, 2016

Hey now! 2 Pac has so many classic bops. His music still sounds good. And, I see my boo MC at #11. Also, “Tha Crossroads” is a classic. I love that song. Toni’s “Let It Flow” is a brilliant slow jam, Babyface was THAT dude back then. Writing all those classics, left & right. Overall, great list. I hate the “Macarena”, what a s***** ass song. Just horrible, through and through…

  6. DTG June 17, 2016

That #11 song is trash by a trash artist.

Word! Pariah Scarey is nothing but a knockoff Whitney golddigging sl(u)t who became Tommy’s side chick while he was still married to his 1st wife. Trading sexual favors for label status while the company cheated and manipulated her sales. Karma caught up to her cause now the Prozac alcoholic is playing Vegas casinos. Tommy cant help her now.

People forget her a lot now but Jewel was releasing such beautiful and great songs. Good singer and great songwriter.
And well, what can I say? Mariah, Celine and Alanis slaying hard in 1996, I mean, yeah hit singles…. but also AMAZING REAL album sales and the TALENT and classic music to match all the hype, and promo and what now. You know who gets all that push now but with absolutely nothing to back it up in terms of quality, talent and not even in terms of real success outside streaming and cheap singles 🙂

y’all b****** should stahp whining I’m sure Diana, Donna & other legends thought the quality of music was deteriorating at that time too with time comes change every time there’s a #FBF you b**** & whine abt how things were good GET OVER IT I’m sure in 20 years music will b trashier than this & we will say these were the good ol’ days now stfu!

    • JOHNVIDAL June 18, 2016

Hmm no! They were not thinking that. I´ve seen Diana being mesmerized by that young girl called Whitney Houston after presenting her at an awards show. Obviously a better singer than her and all. Music was not deteriorating in the 80s and 90s. However now, it has, and no generation has been better than the previous one since the beginning of the millenium.

  10. RihannaIsMadonna June 18, 2016

thanks for acknowledging that, no generation has been better than the previous one so why weep about it? things won’t change as warped as things r, they just are every generation has a doppelganger of the previous generation y’all know that, just happens this millennium they depend on skin, controversy & adoration on who has the best life on IG
