Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.
So, just as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’ allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.
This week we try (and fail) at doing our best hip roll to Shakira‘s hit single ‘Hips Don’t Lie,’ featuring Wyclef Jean. Though this week in 2006 brought with it the song’s dethronement from the top of the Hot 100 by the year’s ‘American Idol’ winner Taylor Hicks, by the time he hopped over ‘Hips’ to occupy the tally’s perch, the damage had long been done by the Colombian beauty.
Topping the charts in over 50 countries worldwide during its prime, ‘Hips’ lent Shakira her first and only #1 single (to date) on the Billboard Hot 100. Going on to sell nearly 20 million copies, the song was not only the most successful release of 2006, but still reigns as one of the best-selling tunes of all time – thanks in no small part to a rocking video that featured the return of hip-rolling choreography that brought Shaki to U.S. fame a few years prior (see: ‘Whenever, Wherever’).
Tuck in below to see if any of your faves from today can be spotted on the Hot 100’s lineup this week 10 years ago:

Funny how in 2006 Rihanna had 2 songs in the top 25 and in 2016 she has the same if not double… That is dope
Cute throw back….. I wonder where the hip shaking parrot at now?
Yaaaaas 10 years later and Riri is still slaying just as hard
Trash then and trash NOW!
AMEN chile and did I see it said 20M wheres the reciepts am sure TGJ is wikipedia #LIES
Beyonce wanted to be her so bad Kii.
“I’m just jealous that I wasn’t born Latina. I wish I had been because the culture is so beautiful. “
Girl talk about your own fav!
Beyoncé album sold more copies, won more Grammys, tour made more money, and so forth. If I recall in 2006/2007 Ciara was Beyoncé, Shakira, and Rihanna’s LESSOR & she was Rihanna’s opening act lol! Don’t do girl!
Who cares? My fav has NEVER wished to be about race. Ciara is a PROUD black woman. Gtfoh f**.
@CRACKIE Latina is NOT a race, you dumbass ???
Chile your fave wishes HE was born with a vagïna. Luckily modern technology allows us to create false reproductive organs for MEN like your fave!
DRAG HA!
ABSOLUTE DEATH!!!! ?????
That’s the year music started making my head hurt. With the snapping and the leaning and the rocking…
D4L “Girl shake that lafft taffy” lol
And also remember that Stripper/Ho anthem “watch it while he check up on it
Dip it, pop it, twerk it, stop it” mess.
No worse than other 50 ones that came before or after”Check On It”…. Find a short cliff and walk of it!
LOL QUEEN RIRI WITH 2 SONGS IN THE TOP 20, AND STRUGGLEYONCE NOWHERE TO BE SEEN.
FAST FORWARD 10 YEARS, SAME STORY LMAO #THATRIHANNAREIGNTHO
In 2006 Beyoncé was a better singer, dancer, performer, Better first week sales, albums sold more domestically/world wide, more awards, more money, tours grossed more money, better reviews, and more respect and had the SAME MAN! Fast forward to 2016 I see not much has changed either… Rihanna is still a singles artist and Beyoncé is still kicking her ass in every area per usual!
are you comparing Beyoncé 2006 to 2016?
LOL 2006 OR 2016, THE BYTCH IS STILL CHASING QUEEN RIRI LMAO
Sadly, 90% of them are flopping now. I hope Xtina can make a comeback. Riri is doing great. And Beyoncé is just keep on slaying since the DC!
Beyoncé, Rihanna, Pink, and Alicia are the only ones who make noise in 2016 and still sale albums. All them others Ciara, Fergi, Gwen keep trying even though their album sales are clearly are telling them to STOP!
Sadly Alicia is flopping too. Her last album didn’t even sell a million. But Pink is still slaying tho. But no one slays like Beyoncé does, I mean I can’t think of her peers that slay album sales, tours, awards (Grammy, VMA etc), always draw media attention. Apart from that, she’s up there with newer generation on streaming and YouTube as well as one of the most Vevo-certified. And theres this something that her peers and her new competitor wouldn’t have, and that’s singing and performing abilities, respects and Forbes highest earning. She’s slaying in almost everything. Even her singles, platinum and multi platinum singles even tho they don’t even number one.
Crap….both lists
Yay I love your sane and realistic comments so much! Wish you would visit this site more often. I agree. Well, 2006 was still better, but like I always say, it started going downhill way before, around the time the new millenium started, not in no damn 2008. The 00s already lacked a lot of the diversity the 90s had. And most of the songs in the hot 100 were already bland and only for the moment compared to the previous decades.
Ten yeats later and Rihanna is still cranking out #1s and top 10s. She’s also the only artist on the 2006 chart that still here. Panic! Of The Diso has a new song on the charts, but it’s their first one since I Write Sins on the 2006 chart. But this was birth of BAD R&B and Hio Hop songs. Hint Cassie, Riding Dirty, Lil Jon. Also when pop was very urban.
That was the year the last good year of R&B & Hip-hop! Mary J Blige “The Break Through” was slaying & just about every white suburban kid wanted to be a rappe lol! The. 2007/2008 came along and everything went back to Dance & Electronica
I felt that the genres were merging back then. But every r&B had a rapper feat and a hip hop beat. Mary had a huge year, if anyone was winning in 2005/6, it was JD. It was the year when R&B and Hip Hop WAS pop music.
True. It’s amazing How many girls from that year are no longer here. So are still trying but need to stop & accept their time has come and gone.
That 10 year mark is the true challenge, most can’t even get passed 5. But that’s nothing new, many artist in the 80s were no more in the 90s, same with 70s, 60s and so on.
Nelly Furtado was slaying 2006/2007
I write sins, not tragedies <3
2006 was the beginning of the end. Most of those songs sound so dated now. I will say tho, Ain’t No Other Man is still Christina Aguilera’s best single to date.
The only way you hear about most of those artists now is if you do a where are they now Google search except we know Joc is on LHHATL.
I remember when Christina performed Aint No Other Man at the MTV Movie Awards and earned a standing ovation. One of her best performances imo. Its a shame Change isn’t doing well, I suspect its due to it being a charity single and rushed released.
That’s the year the industry started going down, music & money wise. It got horrible in 2008.
Music in 2006 was good
I don´t understand why cause the song is not too good, definitely not, but isn´t the Justin Timberlake song the best seller of the last weeks? Cause everytime I check itunes it is #1. The industry, apart from being crap quality wise nowadays, is less fair than ever. He should be #1. This is a perfect climate for singers without much to back up their hype like Rihanna, not even cheap sales.
Anyway, Shakira has had an amazing career with sooo many hits in parts of the world with Spanish language. Much more than JLo. In 2002 Shakira had the BEST selling album worldwide. That same year was JLos peak too when it comes to sales with her album JLo, and it only managed to be the 12th album worldwide if I remember correctly. That´s how big teh difference is. Celine Dion and her album A new Day has Come was #2 that year worldwide btw. Sooo impressive cause she wasn´t even at her commercial peak, which was 1996-1999. Apart from success, Shakira had some really good music, especially before entering the English market, JLo has never had that quality.
