After venting about the vapidness of the industry in response to the noise about Swift’s takedown at the hands of Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, Gomez argued that there are “most important things to talk about.”
The drama started when a fan seized the moment to ask her why she’d yet to weigh-in on the one topic that has dominated headlines over the last few weeks – the killings of unarmed Black men at the hands of police. And more specifically the #BlackLivesMatter movement.

What an incredibly dumb articulation of an underdeveloped view. The whole episode is rendered worse when considering the fact that she did not have to reply to the comment in the first place.
The reality is that no artist is obligated to hashtag anything.
However, the flippancy of her words and the lack of tact when delivering them almost makes her sound “unbothered” – which is a problem.
Musicians aren’t politicians or lawmakers – hence ultimately don’t make decisions at the top. Yet, they do command large followings and therefore possess a wealth of influence. The fact she doesn’t understand that a hashtag can indeed save a life by promoting awareness of a vital cause is as woeful as it is worrying.
Sure, it’s by no means a must that she should say anything. Yet, in doing so, she may have shaved time off of her already unremarkable career.

Well I am not going to pretend that celebrities do actually care about these issues, particularly the black lives matter movement, since their money puts them in a position where they cannot worry about harrasment at the hands of police officers, and therefore they tend not to understand the seriousness of the issues; however Gomez’s comment was grossly ignorant and she deserved the lashings she got.
