Fans of Frank Ocean are still catching their breath following the surprise debut of his new album ‘Endless.’ And, according to reports, there’s more titillating twists in store.

Previously titled ‘Boy’s Don’t Cry,’ the crooner’s long-awaited sophomore project (seemingly) arrived in visual album form this morning.
But here’s where things get interesting.
Rolling Stone are reporting that ‘Endless’ isn’t the actual follow-up to 2012’s ‘Channel Orange’ and that album with a different title (to both ‘Boys’ and ‘Endless’) will be released over the course of this weekend.
If indeed the case, it’s yet another riveting chapter in Ocean’s already compelling narrative.
More broadly, it re-affirms the reality that the “event release” format – championed by the likes of Beyonce and adapted by Kanye, Rihanna, and more – is here to stay.
We just hope these releases don’t become so complex that they end up being counterproductive.
For now, though, color us excited!

I disagree with the write-up. Event releases are not here to stay, b/c the economics of the music industry are changing. Beyonce is a mega-star who can debut her special on HBO, a very elite spot to be in. Most artists will have to content themselves to releasing a single visual at a time.

However, I have a counter-intuitive prediction. It will become less necessary to have an expensive video to make a song a hit now that audio streaming has become so pervasive. Drake’s success with One Dance enlightened me to this potentiality.

It was interesting to see people’s reaction on social media. Everybody was like blah. I think what got frank was waiting too long in between projects. The hype also. I mean people aren’t even listening to the songs they’re just not interested in album at all.
Nope releasing videos actually help many songs to become bonafide hits. If you can create an event out of an album & if the anticipation is there then it’ll work. He’s more of a media artist than a mega artist. People give streaming way too much credit.
