Lady Gaga has not only scored her fourth #1 album with ‘Joanne,’ she’s defied the odds and flown past the forecasts.
The final Billboard numbers are in for the superstar’s 5th album and they await after the jump…
Per Nielsen Soundscan, ‘Joanne’ achieved a Sales Plus Streaming (SPS) figure of 201,000 to open atop of this week’s Billboard 200.
The set, which was initially projected to premiere with SPS in the ballpark of 180k, now becomes the year’s 4th highest debut (and second highest for a female).
Its number is bested only by Drake’s ‘Views’ (1.04 million), Beyonce’s ‘Lemonade’ (653k), and Frank Ocean’s ‘Blonde’ (276k).
In traditional sales, ‘Joanne’ shifted 170k copies first week.
Gaga now becomes the first woman to earn four #4 albums on the Billboard 200 in the 2010s. In doing so, she surpasses Beyonce and Taylor Swift, each with three during the decade. [Source]

It’s very well esablished that Rihanna does, infact, sell albums. Yes, admittedly, the majority of her past albums have not debuted with high (frontloaded) numbers in their respective first week but said albums usually generate wonderful longevity therafter which is why they then go onto sell millions especially worldwide.

It is clear why “ANTI” has suffered enormously in sales: A) It’s rollout was severely botched – 1.47M free downloads were consumed within the intial several hours in which “ANTI” was released thus, from a marketing perspective, it is blatantly obvious why the albums overall sales would falter from then onward. Nonetheless, irrespective of that, she has still managed to garner sales of 500K +.
B) The album has fared much better on streaming platforms than it has on digital platforms and why? Streaming has become the dominant format in which people listen to/consume music and Rihanna has been highly popular on almost all streaming services (SPOTIFY) since their inception.

2. “Four Five Seconds”, a folk-rock inspired Rap/Sung ballad, was a global smash-hit and peaked either in the Top 3 or at #1 in the majority of the world’s major music markets. She could have easily released her album around the time but she didn’t. Any theory as to why is simply stipulation. “Better Have My Money” was a [US-only] release (though it still charted WW on her name and hype alone) and even with it being an urban/trap-dominant song, sonically speaking, and where the majority of high charting or #1 songs in 2015 were Pop-based (ie. “Shake It Off/All About That Bass” etc) it still managed to go platinum in pure sales and become one of the most streamed song’s of the year as well as being one of the biggest hits in Urban/Rhythmic radio that year also. If she truly did want a #1 hit with either of the aforementioned songs, I’m sure she would have released songs in which she knows would have easily given her #1 hits but she didn’t.

3. Rihanna and Drake had teased that they were doing a collaboration together in mid-2015 on Instagram and Twitter but the song, which turned out to be “WORK”, was released in January 2016. The fact simply remains that the album wasn’t completed and she wanted to perfect it to her standards.

Albums outweigh singles. Rihanna is not the second best selling anything. She’s sold a bunch of dollar digital singles. As for if she were of another race, that wouldn’t guarantee extra sales either because of the artist & style of music.
