Mariah Carey may be weary of calling her new E! series a “reality show,” but she ironically owes a debt of gratitude to one of the most popular titles in the genre – ‘The Real Housewives Of Atlanta.’
Find out why below…
‘Mariah’s World’ is housed on the E! network, which is part of the NBC Cable family. And, as has become customary with new launches, the “docu-series” was simultaneously broadcast on sister channel Bravo too.
Interestingly, the E! premiere only drew 0.63 million viewers (with a paltry 0.28 adults 18-49 rating).
Yet, the Bravo version – which aired immediately after ‘The Real Housewives Of Atlanta’ performed considerably better. It commanded an audience of 1.24 million viewers (and a 0.50 adults 18-49 rating).
With Sunday’s RHOA watched by 2.74 million viewers, it’s arguable that Mimi benefitted in earnest from those who stuck around after getting their weekly fix of Kenya Moore and co.
While it’s inevitable that the numbers will be touted as a success, some critics are already weighing up the issues ahead.
See, although some see “viewers as viewers,” ‘Mariah’s World’ is used as a lead-in for fellow E! show’ ‘The Royals.’ So with Carey’s show performing so averagely on its home channel, it’s already having a negative effect on the ratings of the series that is scheduled after it.
What’s more, without the RHOA lead-in from next week, how well will the show stand on its own proverbial heels? Will Mariah’s “non-reality show” continue to need a reality show to sustain?
Time (and the numbers) will tell.
