It’s that time of year again!
Indeed, the air is still buzzing as today brought with it the highly anticipated 2017 Grammy nominations unveiled, per usual, via an announcement special weeks before the actual showing. But, what also comes with the ‘per usual’ announcement are the jaw-dropping surprises, snubs, and all out “shut-outs” that accompany the annual spectacle.
Always a heated debate-starter, the coveted tally saw the likes of Zayn Malik, Janet Jackson, Future, Nick Jonas, and more all go without mention while others, some fans believe, weren’t mentioned in the correct categories.
In the meantime, tuck in below for our list of 2017’s Grammy surprises and snubs:
Surprise: The leading nominees are all artists of color (Beyonce – 9, Drake – 8, Kanye West – 8, Rihanna – 8, Chance the Rapper – 7)
Snub: Rihanna’s ‘Anti’ singles celebrated, but the album itself is left out of major categories
Surprise: Ariana Grande nabs two nods in pop categories, while Sia‘s ‘This Is Acting’ nabs major nods
Snub: Selena Gomez, Katy Perry (‘Rise’), Britney Spears (‘Make Me’), and Lady Gaga (‘Perfect Illusion’) left out
Surprise: Justin Bieber – normally shunned by the academy – receives multiple nominations across major categories (including ‘Album of the Year’ and ‘Song of the Year’)
Snub: Nick Jonas & Zayn Malik shut out completely
Surprise: Chance the Rapper wows with historic 7 nominations for his stream-only album, ‘Coloring Book,’ including ‘Best New Artist.’
Snub: Zayn Malik (who was technically ineligible due to his stint with One Direction) and Alessia Cara omitted from ‘Best New Artist’ category
Surprise: R&B’s new(er) kids – Tory Lanez, Bryston Tiller, BJ The Chicago Kid, Ro James, PARTYNEXTDOOR – all nab nods
Snub: R&B’s bigger names – Chris Brown, Monica, Usher, and Alicia Keys – all shut out
Surprise: Beyonce nominated in ‘Best Rock Performance’ for ‘Don’t Hurt Yourself’ and Rihanna’s ‘Kiss It Better’ nominated in R&B song category
Snub: Legendary shut out – Janet Jackson (0 nods) / David Bowie (shut out of major categories)
Surprise: Kanye nabs 8 Grammy nods despite history of consistently shading the Grammys
Snub: Drake‘s ‘One Dance’ (easily the song of the summer) completely omitted while his ‘What A Time To Be Alive’ co-star, Future, also completely shut out from nods.
Surprise: Solange‘s ‘Cranes in the Sky’ nabs R&B nod
Snub: ‘Cranes in the Sky’s parent album, ‘A Seat At the Table,’ released on September 30th, 2016 (in time to be nominated this year), was omitted from nominations. Due to the date of its release, it is most likely ineligible for 2018 nomination.
