If everything Katy Perry touches turns to gold (or better), we can assure you ‘Chained to the Rhythm’ will be no exception.
The first release from her yet-titled follow-up to 2013’s hit-ridden ‘Prism,’ Perry – with a little help from Bob Marley‘s grandson, Skip Marley – is playing approximately no games with her Max Martin/Sia written comeback single.
Is it game changing and on track to turn the pop world upside down? Eh…we wouldn’t say so. Will it dominate radio in every market? Unquestionably.
Hear it in full inside and you’ll see what we mean:
OMG! How does this woman keep doing this? On one side of the coin, the song’s lyrics speak to Katy Perry’s career in a nutshell: ‘Too comfortable, living on a bubble.” She has a clear, comfortable, and almost predictable formula that is present on every single one of her albums. But…
From where we’re standing, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. For as many naysayers will thumbs down the Skip Marley-assisted tune for its “safety,” something has to be said for one knowing her audience and giving them exactly what they want (a note some of her competitors should copy). Even her most sonically daring singles in the past have still never gone so far left they alienated the core of her base.
This song will ZOOM to the top of the Hot 100 (if it doesn’t debut there) and radio will eat this up! It’s only been out an hour (as of time posted), and hell, we’ve listened to it three times already. The girl has an uncanny ear for a hit and ‘Chained’ will be no exception.
Welcome back Katy! You don’t even have to snatch my wig, I’ll just detach it and politely hand it over to you.
