The Numbers Are In: Future Makes History With Back To Back #1 Albums

Published: Monday 6th Mar 2017 by Rashad

A week after seeing his self-titled fifth album top the Billboard 200, rapper Future pulls a repeat by topping the same chart with its follow-up, ‘HNDRXX.’

As predicted, despite clocking a lower sales equivalence than its feature-less forerunner, ‘HNDRXX’ still managed to move enough units to see it debut at #1 on this week’s refreshed chart.  The measure makes him the first act in Billboard history to achieve back-to-back No.1 debuts on the Billboard 200 in successive weeks.  Additionally, the ‘Real Sistas’ rapper lays claim to another unique title:  the first solo artist to ever replace himself at #1 on the album chart.

Curious to know just how many units ‘HNDRXX’ shifted to achieve the historic feat?  Find out inside:

‘HNDRXX’ first week sales = 121,000

Via Billboard:

HNDRXX bows with 121,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending March 2, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 48,000 were in traditional album sales, 63,000 were in SEA and 11,000 were in TEA. (All units are rounded to the nearest thousand.) HNDRXX was released on Feb. 24 through A-1/Freebandz/Epic Records.

It’s sad that this generation of music artists are so pressed about having #1 albums (regardless of low sales) than producing great bodies of work that will sell regardless of number one status.

?❗️It has a lot to do with the public tho. For the most part people don’t appreciate real artistry, singing, etc anymore. It’s all about everything but the music. A lot of these artist today would’ve never even got a release date if we were in the glory era of music.

Future makes microwaveable rap music. That’s why he can release two albums in such a short span.

What would compel anyone to buy a Future album? I’m curious to know.

For starters you really cannot go by these charts. “Traditional album sales” are really just the number of albums shipped to retailers. “SEA” stands for streaming albums and anyone with a subscription like me can listen to new albums free (remember that if you click to listen to an album it counts now as a SEA even if you don’t finish the album or don’t like it). “TEA music sales” are just people that listen or download individual tracks. So with all that said, ANY artist a label pumps a LITTLE money into will go #1 while actual music sales are a thing of the past. Seems like the Billboard 200 needs to just retire or totally revamp its math.
