TLC Talk Vegas Residency, Beyonce, Ed Sheeran’s ‘No Scrubs’ Sample, & More

Published: Saturday 1st Jul 2017 by Rashad

TLC is traipsing the promo trail in support of their fifth and final album, available yesterday (June 30).

Kicked off by the critically-acclaimed ‘Way Back,’ ‘Haters,’ and ‘American Gold,’ the duo have taken to press in support of their self-titled project and have lent no shortage of OMG-worthy quotes along the way.

The latest come courtesy of a sit-down with the good folks at the Associated Press where the ladies were quizzed on their next ventures (given the ‘TLC’ project has been announced as their last album), their thoughts on Ed Sheeran‘s ‘Shape of You,’ and so much more.

ON LIFE AFTER THEIR LAST ALBUM:

“That doesn’t mean we’re done though. That doesn’t mean we won’t do a residency in Vegas,” T-Boz said. We have a body of work and when you (have) timeless songs like ‘Waterfalls’ and ‘No Scrubs’ and ‘Unpretty,’ you should be able to (tour), you know. The white rock bands do it all the time. Why can’t we?”

Chilli said: “We’ve had some people come and reach out, but it just got to be right.”

ON THE ABSENCE OF GIRL GROUPS IN THE INDUSTRY:

“If you end up going solo that’s fine, but don’t go in there like, ‘I’m just going to use this as my platform,'” Chilli said. “[Don’t go] into a group knowing that you want to be a solo artist.”

ON BEYONCE’S “FAN GIRL” MOMENT:

“This is the first time this ever happened. Like, she just rolled up on us and was like, ‘Thank you for everything,'” Chilli said.

“‘That was some of the best times of my life’ is what she said,” T-Boz added.

“We were like, ‘Oh really? Never knew that! People said that she said stuff like that in interviews, I just didn’t know. … That was like real humbling and just like, ‘Wow, really? OK girl!'”

ON ED SHEERAN CREDITING ‘NO SCRUBS’ WRITERS, KANDI BURRUSS & TAMEKA “TINY” HARRIS, ON HIS HIT ‘SHAPE OF YOU’

“I’m going to be honest with you: When I heard the song, I couldn’t hear it. I was like, ‘Let me hear it again,'” Chilli said.

“I didn’t (hear it) either, but they [Kandi & Tiny] sure went after those publishing checks,” T-Boz said. “I was like, ‘I don’t blame you!'”

Note:  Chilli & T-Boz did not contribute to the writing of ‘No Scrubs’ so they were not credited. Click here to read more.

I think they should do a Vegas residency and make the money. I realize that both of them have children but by now their kids should be grown up and they should make the money while the offers are on the table.

I honestly and truly don’t hear no scrubs and Eds song. I feel bad for him because I feel he gave them credit just because he didn’t want to deal with that all over again.

I could tell the first time I heard shape of you. It’s something about the cadence of some of the lyrics that had me saying “hanging on the passengers side of your best friends ride trying to holla at me.” I’m not mad at Kandi and Tiny for getting their credit, and it was a smash for Ed so at the end of the day he’s probably not too pressed about it.

I don’t hear it at all either no matter how much I try. I don’t feel sorry for him though.

You didn’t mention the part where Tboz discussed being racially profiled by police twice, one time being in the year 2000! That was a highlight of the interview.

In No Scrubs its the part ” No, I don’t want no scrubs, a scrub is a guy who can’t get no love from me”

Ed pre chorus in Shape of You “Girl, you know I want your love, your love was handmade for somebody like me”

It has the same timing, phasing and melodic vocal structure.
Now I know LOADS of songs that do that thing where your own lyrics but timing and structure of lyric is inspired from another song.
Does this mean R. Kelly got credit for the “OOOh oh oh oh oh oh’s that Tamar used in My Man that’s from his song A Woman’s Threat?

    Think Ed was generous.
