‘Despacito’ Ties Mariah Carey To Become Longest Hot 100 #1 Ever

Published: Monday 28th Aug 2017 by Sam

It’s a bittersweet week for Mariah Carey. At least as far as chart stats go. And it’s all thanks to Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee‘s ‘Despacito (ft. Justin Bieber).’

More below, including why Mimi will likely have Taylor Swift to thank next week.

In topping the Billboard Hot 100 for its 16th week, ‘Despacito’ officially ties ‘One Sweet Day’ – Carey’s collaboration with Boyz II Men – as the longest reigning hit in the chart’s 59-year history.

It achieved the feat by accruing the following in the US this week: 80,000 digital downloads (fuelled by a 69 cent price slash on iTunes), 44.6 million streams, and a colossal multi-format radio audience of 106 million.

Mariah will be able to breathe a sigh of relief, though, as Taylor Swift is guaranteed a #1 debut with her mega-selling new single ‘Look What You Made Me Do.’ For, as reported, the ‘Reputation’ lead offering outsold ‘Despacito’s one week total in one day. It’s also proving a streaming monster.

Whether Swift’s looming success will see off future competition from the summer anthem remains to be seen. It goes without saying, though, that Mariah and her Lambs will be hoping that it will. Because, should ‘Despacito’ return to the top spot, it will officially nab the all-time record.

Here’s how the current list of longest leading Hot 100 hits looks like:

The Longest-Leading Billboard Hot 100 No. 1s

16 (to date), “Despacito,” Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee feat. Justin Bieber, May 27, 2017

14, “Macarena (Bayside Boys Mix),” Los Del Rio, Aug. 3, 1996
14, “I’ll Make Love to You,” Boyz II Men, Aug. 27, 1994
14, “I Will Always Love You,” Whitney Houston, Nov. 28, 1992

*********

We’re forming a prayer circle here at TGJ. Because, while records are made to be broken, surely something with more bite deserves the honor. Like, ‘Despacito’ is cute and all, but it’s not a patch on most of the songs listed above.
