Report: 2017 MTV VMAs Deliver Show’s Lowest Ratings Ever

Published: Wednesday 30th Aug 2017 by Rashad

Not even a collection of stage-blazing performances from the likes of Fifth Harmony, Kendrick Lamar, P!nk, and hostess Katy Perry (with help from ‘Swish Swish’ co-star Nicki Minaj) were enough to help this year’s MTV VMAs drum up some respectable viewership figures.  After netting their lowest ratings this century with 2016’s s showing, the hopes were probably a bit higher for this year’s.

Preliminary figures revealed yesterday offered a bleak outlook, one confirmed by today’s final figures that indicate the 2017 edition of the MTV VMAs were their lowest rated in history.

Viewership = 5.68 million

(across 10 networks)

To put that into perspective:

“That’s down from the 6.5 million people who watched the VMAs in 2016, and the 9.8 million who watched the year before, the Nielsen company said. In 2002, back when the show was seen only on MTV, the event drew 11.9 million viewers.”

Going head to head with the season finale of HBO’s wildly popular series, ‘Game of Thrones,’ isn’t solely to blame for this year’s low viewership, but it certainly didn’t help.
