Sometimes surprise albums can cause for surprise sales. Just ask Jhene Aiko.
Full story below…
The soulful songbird hatched her second studio album ‘Trip’ on Friday without any prior announcement.
And while the personal set, which comes packaged with a short film and book of poetry, drummed up buzz amongst fans, the lack of pre-release awareness looks to have backfired.
Because, according to Hits Daily Double, the set is on-course to open with 8,000-10,000 in pure sales. With its streaming factored in, the number climbs to 28,000-32,000.
********
Ultimately, the SPS figure matters most. But surely we’re not the only ones alarmed by how disproportionate the pure and SPS numbers are.
On the upside, with awareness growing, maybe it’ll be a slow-and-steady sales trajectory for the set?
Sounds about right! Jhene music is sleep music
lol she would have sold that amount even with promo lol.
She’s not a major artist. She kinda just dropped this album out of nowhere without a single, promo ect.. Plus there isn’t a physical version yet, perhaps.. The album just started to make waves….
It will pick up.
As if she was a big star and people would have bought more with some singles that wouldn’t have charted anyway…?
Lol, why y’all put it in the headline like that. Damn that’s bad. I listened to the album, and yeah, it’s nothing but background noise for when I’m doing homework or cleaning or something.
Right lmfao. I hollered when I saw that. TGJ so shady. They normally put the same title but the leave the figures for inside the post. This time they just put the 10k in the headline. I can’t.
First week sales are irrelevant in 2017. Not one album hasn’t sold 1M copies this year, NOT ONE!
Actually in 2017 first-week sales are more important than ever. And what do you mean there aren’t any albums this year that haven’t sold 1 million. Of course they’re are.
I agree with the troll Nene Leakes troll above me ⬆️.
R&B in general is in full of disappointment but the music industry itself has shown how lost they’re in how to replenish the years when music would sell by anyone (Ex: since 2007).

Jhene Aiko…. girl idk what happened to the hype but SZA & Kehlani has took the “N*ggaz Ain’t Sh*t and So What I Don’t Bathe” lane now.

“Sometimes surprise albums can cause for surprise sales. Just ask Jhene Aiko.” – Sam ….. LMFAO wow at this shade.
Hollering haha lol.
Wow didn’t even know it was out
I liked one song by her back in the day when B2K was out…
It’s quality over quantity & that’s exactly what this is, the album is fire ? & a nice body of work that’s a accomplishment in itself
I commend Jhene for dropping the project the way she did, regardless of album sales. If she waited for “that” hit single this project would’ve most likely got pushed back repeatedly like a lot of R&B albums, which doesn’t help album sales either. It sucks that R&B doesn’t rule the charts like it did in 2004/2005 (unless there is a white singer behind it ? ). Nonetheless, this project is an amazing, quality body of work; you just have to be in a state to really sit down and connect with it. We need to stop always highlighting album sales over album quality.
Actually r&b was better in the early 2000’s and especially the 90’s. It was catchy, there were a lot of jams and unforgettable. Nowadays nearly every r&b song sounds the same and became so boring (the males even more worse than the females). As someone here already said – her whole album sounds like background music you listen to while cleaning your apartment. Nothing that sticks in your ear or that you will sing to while being in the shower. It’s just a snoozefest. As was her last album. Khelani was one of the more interesting albums this year though, it really had nice vibes and different sounds
Didn’t even know she released a new album *shrugs*
Why do black (and yes Jhene is black) artist have to compete so hard. Sales don’t mean anything. Tours are where the money comes in. These rock stars and country artist release albums that do these numbers first week and they are still talented. I love her music and since I now know about it I will be supporting.
We live in the era of streams, sales are dead so no its not alarming. Plus physical copies arent even available and Jhene did nothing to promote it.
Or cause no one cares?
There’s no big “buzz” single prior to ther album’s release hence less public buzz and sales. While We’re Young wasn’t enough.
I didn’t know she had an album out, but now that I do, these numbers aren’t surprising.
U Know What?? F*** The First Week Album Sales! Jhene’s “Trip” Album Is A HOT Album!!! Great Albums With Poor Sales Like Trip, Fantasy Ride + Basic Instinct By Ciara, LoveKing By The-Dream, & How To Be A Lady Vol 1 By Electrik Red, Does Not Make The Albums Bad! They’re Still Dope! U Heaux Sayin’ “I Never Knew The Album Came Out” The Real Question Is, Now That You Know, Are U Gonna Listen To The Album Now? If Not, Then You Are Part Of The …..*sigh* Never Mind ?
It’s not about the numbers, It’s about getting the music/story out there to F A N S. The shorty film honestly brought me to tears. Who knew she was such a good actress and story teller? I look forward to seeing the live performances and tour for this era, I’m hoping for more stellar ascetics and video production . Also, I’m praying for another Twenty88 project, that first one was F I R E!!
This!!!! ????????the accuracy!!!
AGREED!!!!
That’s a lot of streams!
This album is amazing! Jhene’s music is pure art and you have to be in a certain state of mind to really connect. She’s the type of artist who doesn’t seem to care much about sales but rather the quality. She released this album without an promo and you can tell the album was more of a healing process for her than just an album.
