Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.
So, just as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’ allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.
This week we have a taste for ‘Honey,’ the first single from Mariah Carey‘s sixth studio album, ‘Butterfly’ [click here to read our full-length ode to the opus]…
Carey – who’d already seen her named etched in history books for being the first female artist to debut at #1 on the chart (with ‘Fantasy’) and later the first artist overall to have two singles debut atop the charts (‘One Sweet Day’), extended her reign with the release of ‘Honey.’ Found this week in 1997 at #1 in its inaugural chart week, the epic feat made Mimi the only artist to have 3 singles debut at the tally’s perch.
Going on to platinum status, the song may have not gotten much love from the Recording Academy (as it was nominated for two awards but won neither), it does remain a fan favorite among #Lambs for symbolically representing the singer’s real emancipation (i.e. see divorce from Tommy Mottola, shedding of cookie-cutter image, etc.)
