2017 Year In Review: Music’s Biggest Beefs

Published: Sunday 31st Dec 2017 by Rashad

Scribbled in history books for some good and not-so-good reasons, 2017 brought with it some of modern music’s most memorable moments.  Now, as the year draws to a close, TGJ is reflecting on our favorite moments that rocked – and to some degree reshaped – the Urban and Pop musical landscape as we know it.

Next, we’ll reflect on the year’s biggest beefs.  From Nicki Minaj and Remy Ma to Azealia Banks and RZA, the year saw its fair share of musician’s scrapping back and forth.  See who made our list inside:

At the top of the year, the beef on everyone’s lips was Chris Brown vs. Soulja Boy.  The former buds’ quarrel not only made headlines, but almost landed them in the boxing ring for a highly touted Vegas fight (click here to read).

Brown later cancelled the fight (click here to read).

An over 20-year-old beef that unofficially started before the two were even old enough to drive (thanks to their respective fan bases), 2017 saw the rift between former collaborators Brandy & Monica driven even further as the former repeatedly found herself on the defense as onlookers claimed she was throwing subliminal shots at the latter.

Former BFFs and ‘Love & Hip Hop’ alums Joseline Hernandez and K. Michelle entered a shade match against each other this year.  Let’s just say the comments were ‘no holds barred.’

Joseline Hernandez wasn’t the only star to feel K. Michelle’s wrath.  ‘Breakfast Club’ beauty Angela Yee and ‘The Real’ hostess Loni Love didn’t get much love from the ‘Can’t Raise a Man’ singer this year.

Feuding Floridian femcees Trina and Khia have been beefing for what feels like forever.  But, just as fans of each thought their squabbling had ended, Khia – courtesy of a viral web talk show with former adult film star TS Madison – cut into the Diamond Princess once again.

This time the ‘Slip N Slide’ beauty refused to let it slide.

Like K. & Joseline, former gal pals Tamar Braxton and Toya Wright had a highly publicized falling out.

Azealia Banks – who usually beefs with everyone – had a fairly chill year.  Mending fences with a number of acts she’s offended over the years (see:  Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, Iggy Azalea, Erykah Badu, etc.) and starting new beefs with the likes of Cardi B and Remy Ma, one person who the olive branch definitely was not extended to was rapper RZA.  The emcee-turned-director got on the rapstress’s bad side when he distanced himself from her after she alleged Academy Award-winning actor Russell Crowe physically and verbally assaulted her at a party last year (click here to read more).

Her disdain for the rapper extended to 2017.

The year’s biggest beef undoubtedly came courtesy of famed femcees Nicki Minaj and Remy Ma.

After months of perceived “subs” planted across a number of verses spit by the former, Ma fired back with the jaw-dropping ‘Shether’ (click here to read).  Pure fire on a track, the tune earned mountains of praise and put the heat on Minaj to rebut with an equally hot clap back.  Minaj’s three responses didn’t earn the critical acclaim of ‘Shether,’ but they did know some impact on charts [click here to read].

In the months that followed ‘Shether,’ the femcees continued to trade shots in interviews and other songs.  Most of the shots were delivered from Ma.
