Janelle Monae fused truth with artistry on her latest album ‘Dirty Computer.’
Powered up and beamed out to all in April, the set saw the eclectic songbird shatter the silence surrounding her sexuality; she came out as a queer female.
During a recent interview to promote the project on Beats 1 radio, Monae elaborated on the challenges she experienced navigating her sexuality while growing up in Kanas.
Speaking candidly with Ebro Darden, the 32-year-old revealed the uphill battle she encountered dealing with religious influence and even the words of family.
Her words await below…
Powerful.
It goes to show, there’s a lot of liberating potential in sharing one’s story.
For, great music aside, we’re sure Monae has amassed even more fans for resonance of her story.
Girl, you became famous in a tuxedo. We knew what was going on. Actually, as a gay myself, I think it‘s annoying that suddenly all have the need to come out and talk about. Now, all of them are either q****, or trans, or whatever gender they feel no one else has.
Facts she’s using the gays basically, Gaga did the same thing.
I doubt you’re really gay if you can refer to yourself as “a gay.” Gay is not a noun you imbecile. Either you’re just an attention seeking troll or a member of LGBT community that has very low self esteem.
You‘re correct, I used the word wrong. I‘m not a native speaker, so pardon me for that. Actually, no, I don’t have low self esteem. I live openly with my boyfriend and we are not hiding or something like that. But all those attention seekers get on my nerves. And as jasmine said, she’s comes out with that the minute her new album is released. And we all know that it is a hard time to come out, though I never got the point in this big coming out thing. Just act normally, bring your boy- or girlfriend and leave it at that. Her timing makes her not look authentic though.
I agree. She is a musician and salesperson. She is doing this to sell records. If she was truly proud to be gay she would come out truly with her lesbian relationship publicly and do it at a time period where no one can say her motives are to sell albums.
You don’t get to tell someone when it’s okay for them to come out. They have to be ready because it’s a big decision to make. Not only that, it requires support and love from others so that the person that came out doesn’t feel ashamed or regretful, or worse, judged and scrutinized harshly be others. If you watched the video above, you would know she admitted she was scared as hell because she didn’t know if she’d lose some family members. When you’re gay and in the closet, even if other people claim they know you’re gay, it can be the hardest burden in the world to say it and fully own it.
That is not what I meant at all! I clearly stated she is being opertunistic with her timing of coming out. Please don’t try to misuse my words to mean something else.
This is news? Everyone knew she was a d***.
Y’all sissies on here are so stereotypical. So because a woman wears a suit it makes her Gaay wtf. She didn’t wear suits cus she’s Gaaay. She use to wear suits cus she grew up seeing her mom n dad wearin uniforms to work everyday so wearing a suit was like wearing a uniform to work jus like her parents.
She’s using the gays wtf how. If the lady feels like sharing her story on this album I don’t see what’s the problem. Beyonce had multiple miscarriage wait b4 lemonade but she choice to talk about it on that album n I don’t see y’all sissies complaining.
Its 2018….nobody cares if you’re gay, straight, bi-sexual…..her music still doesn’t do anything for me!
@Johnny.. – hahaha
Her music is amazing. Thank you to people like her for bringing us talent. Using gays how? lmao Some of ya´ll are so stupid.
I didn’t ever see her with anyone during high school…
