Mary J. Blige is back!
With her divorce in rearview, the Queen of Hip-Hop/Soul returns with uplifting anthem ‘Only Love.’
In a heartfelt message to fans issued moments ago she explained the ethos of the record, saying:
I’ve been in the studio working on new music and was excited to share a little bit with you all. I had a year of so many ups and downs and have come out the other side with a renewed spirit and a fresh perspective. I’m entering my next chapter with an open mind and heart. ONLY LOVE is where I am right now and I couldn’t keep it to myself any longer!!! #sisterlove#onlylove
Take a listen to the track below…
How unexpected!
MJB dabbles with Disco, with pleasing results.
Her voice has a smokier texture than before, but it works for the most part and compliments the song’s production.
Per her statement, it seems this isn’t a single. But we’re all for the direction. Beyond being an R&B anchor, she’s proven herself to be the definition of versatile, hence we’d readily welcome more material in this vein.
Tidbit: Mary’s upcoming album will serve as her first since last year’s ‘Strength Of A Woman’ – which was released via Capitol. Interestingly, this track has been rolled out via fellow UMG imprint Republic (home of Drake and Ariana Grande) – suggesting MJB made a label switch during her recording downtime.
Not going to chart. Love Mary, but she lost that ‘Be without you’ formula. Cute track though sis. You’re still an icon regardless. Low key retire from making new music, because your catalogue speaks for itself already. Start touring those old hits, sell out shows.
She never said it was a single tho? Lol
I never said it was a single either b|tch.
She is touring though already. She slayed Essence festival performance. Sorry I disagree. It is not a good idea to retire from making new music. Mary is in a unique placr because she has always been the queen of Hip-Hop Soul and no new artist has taken her place or even tried to be what she is. I think she should keep making new music and something will hit like she has done the past 10 years. I’ll give you some good examples of her singles that came out after Be Without You that gets the crowds hype and radio play:
– Just Fine
– Mt. Wrong (Feat. Drake)
– I’m the One (Feat Drake)
– Thick Of It
– U plus Me
– Don’t Mind (this song is fire)
– MJP da MVP (Feat Game & 50 Cent)
– One (Feat U2)
– Enough Crying
Thus, she should keep making new music and something will hit. If she were to stop making new music she would be leaving a void in the industry so why quit?
Young people think anybody in music who’s not Rihanna or Beyonce should retire. But we already know there are SOOOO many things young people do not understand.
Thank you Robert. I just saw Mary perform this past weekend at Essence fest and she slayed. She had the whole audience singing and dancing to her music. There is no one else in the industry like Mary. Queen of hip hop soul.
oh Mary no. Do you, not Donna Summer. you can’t pull it off
I’m not feeling the disco sound. Her voice is beautiful regardless.
I like it
Ok.
Very A/C R&B it would definitely make noise amongst the older crowd at events this summer. The production is a sample of an old school song that I cannot think of the name at the moment. It’s a cool song for elders to rock to.
“Dr. Love” is the song she sampled…
So good Mary…. this is why shes still here
Mary this sounds ok.
Im always pulling for Mary because her music is just too damn good not to support.
The Queen!
I am feeling this….
I love Mary’s voice it’s so soothing!!
