Madonna made headlines for all the wrong reasons last night, after using almost 10 minutes of TV time to talk about herself while “tributing” late legend Aretha Franklin at the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards.
The moment puzzled many, who took to social media in their droves to voice their anger at the 60 year old’s antics.
For most, her approach was tasteless, tactless, and the definition of indulgent.
But, if folk thought the Pop queen was remorseful – then think again.
Instead, she’s offered deeper insight into what happened.
Her words below…
While congratulating Video of the Year winner Camila Cabello on Instagram, Madge seized the moment to say of the drama:
“To clarify: I was asked to present video of the year by MTV! And then they asked me to share any anecdotes I had in my career connected to Aretha Franklin! I shared a part of my journey and thanked Aretha for inspiring me along the way. I did not intend to do a tribute to her! That would be impossible in 2 minutes with all the noise and tinsel of an award show. I could never do her justice in this context or environment.
Unfortunately most people have short attention spans, and are so quick to judge. I love Aretha! R.E.S.P.E.C.T. ??. I Love Camilla! Congrats! I LOVE my dress! AND. I love-L O V E!! ♥️ and there is nothing anyone can say or do that will change that. #vmas #postivevibes
While she made some comments worth considering, the paramount point is that she did a terrible job – whichever way it’s diced or sliced.
She’d have been much better off asking for pre-prepared notes to read off a teleprompter, because when left to her devices she veered (all the way) down Indulgent Avenue. No excuse for it.
Don’t let this distract you from the fact that Nicki Minaj now has a diapersized “my 600lb life” a*** and Ariana Grande legs/calves.
lmfaooo or that corni bum had a dollar store toupee on last night and cant form a complete sentence without counting the letters first lmfaooooooooooo
I don’t like that old evil b|tch Madget irbhwr evil followers like S****** H|V Blonde aka the fake Jasmine. Everyone in see that cracker post it is always something vile about a black woman, including the black woman it habitually impersonates named Jasmine.

Out of all the black soulful artists they could have chosen…SMH. All they know is Madonna. Every time a huge opportunity comes for a tribute or a big moment the first person they think of is Madonna. I guess white people are just white peopling again.
You’re clearly ILLITERATE! It wasn’t supposed to be a tribute! She was sharing a connection between her and Aretha, that’s all! She didn’t have to if she didn’t want to, hence why she was only up there in the first place to present Video of the Year! Maybe second times a charm for ya?
there’s no hope for the ignorant Carlitos
Well then Madonna fans need to do something about their blind ignorance.
A real shame! They should’ve asked the family. Someone like Diana Ross would’ve been more appropriate. I would’ve accepted even Cher over Madonna.
Did a black person spoke on behalf of Elvis when he died?
Girl bye and give dave meyers back those Made for now leftovers ur wearin
That was corny! You tried to be funny.
lmao it was funny, and it was all true lmfaooo.
I thought it was funny too! I can see it. MADONNA once again snatching the Janet swag. Whose the real queen of pop? The classy one, because Janet would Never do this to Aretha.
Janet doesn’t even measure up. Please! We need a strong black woman representing. If not a singer or a producer, then Oprah would do.
Again what did mtv do for real mtv stars Prince, Whitney and Bowie? I blame them for not tributing their past when MTV meant something. I love Madge but hated her speech but feel like she’s getting dragged when it’s the fault of MTV for not doing better and demanding a musical trubute
She could has easily declined, but she didn’t. She saw yet another opportunity for self absorption. So spare me the excuses.
As far as l am concerned, it really doesn’t take 2 much to tribute the Queen of soul. You can keep it short and yet profound. Madonna does have a legitimate excuse and coming back to SM to justify her lack of preparedness is ill-advised and self indulgent.
lack of preparedness for what? it wasn’t f****** tribute you stupid c***. she was sharing an anecdote as she was asked to do before presenting the video of the year award. you lot sure are f****** dense and will desperately grab at anything to self victimize so you have something to b**** about
Blah blah blah, pulling excuses out of your asss for Madonna and her bullsh*t isn’t gonna fly here, so just stop.
Everyone is a critic, she was trying to say something nice about Aretha. I don’t see why people are picking apart her story.
Because she spent the majority of her speech talking about herself, not Aretha. If she was trying to “say something nice” she must have gotten distracted by her own agenda.
Define anecdote…
She would have been better off either declining the spot, or keeping her mouth shut about the fallout. But like any true self absorbed narcissist, she’s not satisfied unless she has the last word. Mess.
I hated the speech for being a rambling mess but again the anger should be directed at MTV and not Madonna for saying a few words. MTV ignored the deaths of ACTUAL MTV era stars Whitney, Bowie and Prince and nobody said a word. Now the Queen of Soul passes (who preceded the MTV era by a good 15-20 years) and people expect a Grammy level tribute? The VMAs are an indulgent mess that focus almost entirely on the now. To be honest if it wasn’t for Madonna would they even had done anything besides play Say a Little Prayer and Respect during a commercial break? Madonna made the mistake of rambling too much and allowing herself to look like she was giving an official statement with the picture of Aretha in the background but more importantly these award shows should do more to honor their icons of the past…Bey, Bruno, Khalid couldn’t spare some time to do a musical tribute? I’m sick of hearing Madonna called a racist today bc people think she was dismissive of Aretha’s legacy or not right to see a white woman say Aretha meant something to her or influenced her…Madonna has always been a champion for equality be in people of color, the LGBT community or women…Her speech sucked but people are dragging her for some unfair reasons. And again this wasn’t the Grammys
I don’t even want to watch it. I have so many fond memories of this woman I don’t want to see her embarrass herself. I also think her tribute speech to Michael Jackson 9 years ago was beautiful. Only the first few lines were about the simulaties between MJ and herself, and she used the anecdote to point out the difference between the two being that he never had a real childhood. She used that speech to paint a sympathetic portrait of him. This sounds like something else entirely.
People clearly don’t understand what an anecdote is…
She used the moment to elevate herself as someone who came from rough beginnings and ultimately crafted the career she is known for. The connection she made to Aretha could not have been more insignificant. Aretha had nothing to do with the things she spoke of, like falling from the top of a cake on stage and losing a shoe, leaving her life in Paris or wherever it was to learn the guitar and write her own songs… the story was all about herself. She spoke of Aretha for probably 20 seconds out of a 7-minute speech. It was absolutely self-indulgent.
she acts like she is surprised
she knew the uproar it will cause
she is smart it is not the first time she does
she had it all prepared ,the fake clarification that was prepared in advance
all that to get attention
because nobody is checking for her soon to come album
i used tolove her , but now i dont
