2018 Year-In-Review: Bruno Mars Makes History With Grammy’s Sweep

Published: Thursday 6th Dec 2018 by Rashad

Whether scribbled in history books for some good, great, or awesomely bad reasons, 2018 brought with it some of modern Pop culture’s most memorable moments.

Now, as the year draws to a close, TGJ is reflecting on 31 moments that rocked – and to some degree shaped – the Urban and Pop musical landscape as we know it.

Next, we reflect on Bruno Mars’ historic Grammy sweep:

Bruno Mars entered the 60th annual Grammy Awards with a whopping 7 nominations for work found on his critically and commercially acclaimed 2016 album, ’24K Magic.’  When he exited the 60th annual Grammy Awards, he walked away with 7 awards.

All of the night’s most coveted awards went to Mars for his funk-infused 24K Magic, which won Album of the Year, and the songs “24K Magic” and “That’s What I Like,” which won Record and Song of the year, respectively. Mars cleaned up in four other categories as well: Best R&B Performance, Best R&B Album, Best R&B Song and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, making him the year’s most decorated artist. One of few times an artist was so heavily nominated and won every award, Mars – in addition to being the year’s most decorated artist – saw his name penciled in Grammy history books for his out-of-this-world sweep.  Thanks to his 7 wins he became:

  • Only male artist in history to win record and song of the year for two different songs from the same album
  • 6th R&B artist in history to win ‘Album of the Year’ (only Stevie Wonder, Natalie Cole, Whitney Houston, Quincy Jones, and Ray Charles before him)
  • 9th artist in history to win 6 or more awards at one ceremony
  • 10th artist in history to win Record, Song, and Album of the year at one ceremony
