Chart Check [Hot 100]: Justin Timberlake Earns 6th #1 Single Thanks To Halsey’s ‘Without Me’

Published: Thursday 10th Jan 2019 by Rashad

Music lovers have finally said “thank u, next” to Ariana Grande‘s chart-topping megahit as, after 7 nonconsecutive weeks of reigning atop the Hot 100 (as we reported here), the diva’s been ousted by another female Pop force:  Halsey.

Dethroning Grande with her hit ‘Without Me,’ Halsey earns her first chart-topper as a lead act, second overall (the first came courtesy of her guest role on ‘Closer’ by The Chainsmokers).  In addition to becoming only the 9th female artist to notch multiple #1 singles this decade (Rihanna – 9, Katy Perry – 8, Taylor Swift – 5, Adele – 4, Cardi B – 3, Kesha – 3, P!nk – 3, Britney Spears – 3), the singer’s done so with a little help from friend Justin Timberlake.  As her cut, ‘Without Me,’ features interpolations of Timberlake’s Timbaland-produced hit, ‘Cry Me a River,’ the song lists JT as a co-writer and thereby sees him credited by Billboard with another #1 to his name.  The move brings his career total to 6 chart-toppers to date.

Curious to see who joins Halsey, Ariana, and Justin (for all intents and purposes) in the top 25 this week?  Look inside to see:

Hot 100 This Week

Billboard reports:

The coronation of “Without Me” brings a portion of a prior hit to the top of the Hot 100 at last, as the song interpolates Justin Timberlake’s “Cry Me a River,” which reached No. 3 in 2003. Among the seven credited writers on “Without Me,” Timbaland scores his eighth No. 1 as a writer and Timberlake tallies his sixth, while Halsey adds her second, after “Closer.” (Notably, “Closer” also reworked a previous top 10: The Fray’s “Over My Head [Cable Car],” which rolled to No. 8 in 2006; “Closer” includes writing credits for The Fray’s Joe King and Isaac Slade.)
