A return to prominence is proving itself elusive (to say the least) for Rap star Iggy Azalea.
Surviving ridicule from some of the genre’s biggest names, label drama, and a highly publicized breakup from basketballer/former fiance Nick Young, the Grammy-nominated diva not only soldiered through to deliver bop after bop from her long-awaited sophomore album, ‘In My Defense’ (see: ‘Sally Walker,’ ‘Started,’ F*** It Up,’ and more), but did so as an independent artist.
Despite her unwavering fight, the project – released July 19 – had to battle chart titans in the form of Ed Sheeran and Beyonce‘s respective efforts (and other top-sellers). The result? It debuted at #50 on the Billboard 200 to the tune of a reported 8,000 units SPS shifted.
Remembering how its predecessor, 2014’s ‘The New Classic,’ debuted at #3 on the same chart, Azalea took to Twitter to share her disappointment with the new LP’s figures. Read her statement inside:

While Azalea’s openness on social media has often worked to her detriment, it’s admittedly refreshing for a celebrity to be so willing to share how they feel about commercial failure. It’s humanizing and endearing in many ways. We can only hope Iggy finds solace in knowing a) she is easily one of the most consistent Rap acts (male or female) in the game – especially from a visual front and b) her offerings are qualitative. There is clear effort and thought that go into her productions, despite the odds, and few can boast a catalog as impressive as hers, dating back to work that preceded her first megahit, ‘Fancy.’
Fans of the rapstress needn’t worry about her vulnerable tweets, however. Before ‘Defense’s release, she’d already confirmed she’s plotting concepts for her next album and hopes to see it in stores before this time next year.
