As a result of Britain’s colonisation and enslaving of several African nations, the UK (specifically London) has become a creative melting pot for people who descend from commonwealth countries.
As a result of this, the nation’s Black Music scene was born out of sounds inspired by the diaspora (American Hip-Hop and R&B, Caribbean Dancehall and West African Highlife to name just three) and set against the grey backdrop of the UK’s technologically advanced metropoleis.
For this reason, the hallmark of some of the scene’s most prominent genres may include sounds pulled from ringtones, West African drum patterns and distorted vocal samples….a fusion of tech & culture.
