Final Numbers Are In: ‘Birds of Prey’ Soundtrack Sold…

Published: Wednesday 19th Feb 2020 by Rashad

Much like its parent film released on February 7, the ‘Birds of Prey’ soundtrack fell prey to an underwhelming commercial response despite receiving praise aplenty from critics.

While the movie opened to $33 million (nearly half of the original $55 million sum expected to accompany its debut), its companion album – preceded by singles from hitmakers Megan Thee Stallion & Normani (‘Diamonds’), Saweetie (‘Sway with Me’), and Doja Cat (‘Boss B*tch’) – was projected to sell less than 20,000 copies its first week (as we originally reported here). The lack of buzz for the effort was undoubtedly underscored by the poor sales performance of its fore-running singles as none of them impacted the Hot 100.

Now, with its inaugural sales tracking week in its rear view, the ‘Prey’ soundtrack’s first 7 day figures have been unveiled.  Look inside to see where it landed on the refreshed Billboard 200 (published today):

First Week Sales (SPS):  20,000

First Week Sales (Pure):  8,000

First Week Chart Placement:  #23

Barely exceeding industry analyst prediction, ‘Birds’ premiere outside of the top 20 still comes as a loss for the soundtrack given the quantity of star power it packed.

The bomb comes just three months after the rebooted ‘Charlie’s Angels’ all-girl film and soundtrack suffered a similar fate (click here to read more).
